HP Spectre x360 16 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 16-f2000 (74R52AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I bought this laptop for $1,200.00 in June 2023. 3 months later the laptop just turned off while being fully charged. It is not even charging now nor turning on. I called HP and after troubleshooting they decided to do a repair on it. It was fixed in 1-2 weeks. Today, Feb 2, 2025 it did the same thing. I called HP to see what the issue was and they were no able to tell me. Since my laptop is now out of warrantly they want to charge me $540.00 to fix it. I bought this laptop which was the high end model at the time thinking it will last me 5-6 years without any issues. I am not about to spend that kind of money only to be conned out of another $540 a year or two later.

P.S. I barely use the computer, maybe 4-5 hours/ week. I have been using my work computer (not an HP !!) 10 hours/day for the last 3 years without ANY issue and it was only ~$400.00

@Thirdhinc, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check the Power Adapter & Cable:

  • Inspect the AC adapter: Look for any visible damage to the power cord or adapter. Even a small fray could cause an issue with charging.
  • Try a different power outlet: Plug the charger into a different power outlet to rule out any problems with the electrical source.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • This is one of the most common solutions to fix power-related issues on HP Spectre x360 laptops:
    1. Disconnect the power adapter and any external devices (USB drives, external mouse/keyboard, etc.).
    2. Turn off the laptop (if it’s on).
    3. Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power from the system.
    4. Reconnect the power adapter and try turning the laptop on again.

Battery Check via HP Diagnostics:

HP Battery Check Tool: HP provides a diagnostic tool that can check the health of the battery.

  1. Press ESC while booting the laptop.
  2. From the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics menu, select Battery Check.
  3. The diagnostic tool will assess the battery health and provide details on whether it needs to be replaced.

BIOS Battery Check:

  1. Restart your laptop and immediately press F10 to enter the BIOS settings.
  2. Under the Diagnostics tab, run the battery test.
  3. This will tell you if the battery is functioning correctly.

Inspect the Charging Port & Cable:

  • Look for debris or damage in the charging port, especially since the Spectre x360 has a compact design. Use a can of compressed air to gently clean out any dust or debris in the charging port.
  • Try using another USB-C charger if you have one compatible with your model, as your Spectre x360 uses USB-C for charging. Make sure the charger you’re testing provides enough power for the device.

Perform a BIOS Reset:

  • A BIOS reset can resolve boot issues that prevent the system from powering up correctly.
    1. Turn off the laptop.
    2. Press and hold the Windows + B keys, then press the power button while holding the keys.
    3. This will start the BIOS recovery process, which may fix any corrupted BIOS settings that might be preventing your laptop from turning on.
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions if necessary.

Try to Boot Without External Devices:

  • Disconnect any external devices connected to the laptop (USB drives, external hard drives, mouse, keyboard, etc.).
  • Then, try to power on the laptop again to see if one of the connected devices is causing the issue.

Check for Overheating:

  • If your laptop turns on briefly and shuts off, it could be a sign of overheating.
  • Ensure ventilation is not blocked: Make sure the cooling vents at the sides of the laptop are clear of obstructions.
  • Use a cooling pad if you notice your laptop is warm or hot to the touch.

Try a Different Power Button Method (for 2-in-1 models):

  • Since your Spectre x360 is a convertible 2-in-1, sometimes the power button behavior can be affected when it’s in tablet mode.
    • Try turning it on in laptop mode (keyboard facing up) instead of tablet mode (with the screen folded).
    • If it still doesn’t turn on, try pressing the power button for 10-15 seconds, then releasing it to initiate a soft reset.

Test the Display:

  • It's possible the laptop is actually turning on but the screen is not displaying anything.
    1. Press the Caps Lock key and check if the light indicator comes on.
    2. Connect your Spectre x360 to an external monitor to see if you get a display. If the external monitor works, it could indicate a problem with the laptop's internal screen or graphics.

Check for Diagnostic Beeps or LED Blink Codes:

  • HP laptops often use diagnostic LED blink codes or beep codes to identify hardware issues.
    • If you see the LED lights flashing in a specific pattern or hear beeping sounds when trying to power on the laptop, this could indicate a hardware issue. You can refer to the HP Support site for specific code meanings related to your model.

I completely understand your frustration, especially with how much you've invested in the laptop. 😞
