@PavanK38, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Battery Issues on HP Notebooks!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Here’s what you can try:

Power Reset:

Shut down your laptop completely.

Unplug the charger.

If your model has a removable battery, take it out.

Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.

Reinsert the battery and plug in the charger.

Turn the laptop back on and recheck the battery status.

Update BIOS & Drivers:

Sometimes, a firmware glitch may cause the battery to vanish from the system’s radar. Use HP Support Assistant to check for BIOS updates.

Battery Reseat (if removable):

Power down the device and reseat the battery—just enough to ensure firm contact.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

@PavanK38, If you're still seeing the battery status as "unknown" and the laptop shuts off when unplugged, here are some basic yet effective troubleshooting steps you can try before diving deeper:

Check Windows Power Plan

Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery

Set to Balanced mode

Make sure Battery Saver is off unless battery is low

Bonus Tip

Hold down F2 on boot to access HP Diagnostics, then run the Battery Test directly from there — it's deeper than what Windows sees.

Let us know which step made a difference — and don’t worry, we’ll guide you till it's sorted! 😊💻🔋

Hi team,

It did not fix the issue, could you please advise me further?

@PavanK38, thanks for following up — and I really appreciate your patience so far!

Since the issue persists even after a BIOS update and basic checks, let’s dig a little deeper:

Let's try this next:

Battery Driver Reset

Press Windows + X and select Device Manager

Expand Batteries

Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and choose Uninstall device

Do not restart just yet

Now go to Action > Scan for hardware changes — this will reinstall the driver.

HP Battery Check via Diagnostics (Advanced)
Turn off the laptop → Press F2 repeatedly on boot → Choose Component Tests > Power > Battery Test.
This gives more accurate battery health info than Windows does.

A couple of quick questions to help narrow it down:

When you hover over the battery icon in the taskbar — does it show "No battery detected" or just "unknown"?

Has the laptop ever been exposed to physical impact or liquid recently?

Do you notice any swelling, overheating, or unusually short battery runtime when it was working?

Hope this helps!

I have tried the option "Battery Driver Reset" but it did not help me unfortunately.

When you hover over the battery icon in the taskbar — does it show "No battery detected" or just "unknown"?
Without charging I cannot turn on my laptop and when I hover over the battery icon it always shows 100% and in HP diagnostics test it shows the battery status is unknown.

Has the laptop ever been exposed to physical impact or liquid recently?

No
