HP ENVY Desktop - 750-414
Linux

Within the last week I successfully added Linux Mint 22.1 on a new Samsung 870 EVO 500GB SSD as a new UEFI source to my HP 750 to create a dual boot dual drive system with Windows 10 on the 128GB SSD original to dthe 750 being the other UEFI source.  I have been able to boot to either windows or to Linux by choosing the  appropriate UEFI source in BIOS.  Yesterday, on attempting to boot to Linux Mint I received an error message that I was not able to read that was followed by a line: Linux Mint 22.1 Xia xxxxx-750-414 tty1; and a second line: xxxxx-750-414 login: _ .  When I entered my administrators login, I was asked for a password, and when I entered the appropriate password, I received the message: Invalid login, and a new request for login.  Yesterday I also tried several other login and password combinations to no avail.  Today I reinstalled BIOS update 828A F.45 dated 5/24/2019, but this did not alter the situation, I am still able to boot to Windows without problem, but receive a failure notice and request for login when I try to boot to Linux.

I made additional installations of Linux Mint to my wife's HP Pavilion, and to my HP Zbook 15 G4 (also adual boot dual drive) without problems.

Any help in resolving this boot problem will be greatly appreciated.

@fpintz,

Welcome to HP Support Community,

It looks like you're facing an issue where Linux Mint on your HP ENVY Desktop - 750-414 isn't accepting your login credentials, while Windows boots without any problems.

One possible reason for this problem is that Linux might not be recognizing your password correctly due to a system error or corruption. You can try accessing the recovery mode and resetting your password to see if that resolves it.

Another possibility is that your system ran out of disk space, which can prevent a successful login. Checking for available space and clearing unnecessary files might help.

In some cases, login loops can be caused by a misconfiguration in the system files, which can be fixed by adjusting file permissions or renaming certain files. If the issue persists, reinstalling the desktop environment or updating the display manager could be a useful step.

If none of these solutions work, a clean reinstallation of Linux Mint might be the most efficient way to get things running again, especially since your other devices aren’t experiencing this problem.
