HP Laptop - 15-ef0025wm
Microsoft Windows 11

I have two areas of black lines on my computer screen.  These appeared after my laptop slid and fell onto the floor while inside my computer bag. Neither areas of black lines are serious, but how can they be fixed and will this affect my laptop going-forward?

Hi @FunTimesWes

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP Laptop screen may have sustained some physical damage, which is causing the black lines to appear. Here are steps and considerations for dealing with this issue:

Possible Causes and Actions

Assess the Damage:

  • Black lines are typically indicative of damage to the display's LCD panel. This could be either cracks or pressure marks that affect the display signaling.

Impact on Functionality:

  • If the lines are static and not expanding, they might not immediately affect the functioning of your laptop. However, over time, additional screen failure may occur, leading to more widespread display issues.

DIY Inspection:

  • Turn off the laptop and carefully inspect the screen under good lighting for visible cracks or breaks. Sometimes, re-seating or adjusting the bezel can alleviate minor pressure points.

Professional Repair:

  • If the issue affects usability or begins to spread, it may be best to have the screen professionally assessed and potentially replaced. A certified HP technician can provide the most reliable repair options without compromising existing warranties.

Preventive Measures:

  • Use a sturdy laptop bag with padded compartments to prevent future falls.
  • Avoid placing heavy objects on top or using excessive force when handling the laptop.

Recommendations

Monitor the Screen:

  • Keep an eye on the lines. If they grow larger or multiply, it's recommended to seek repair sooner rather than later.

Back-Up Important Data:

  • As a precaution, ensure that your data is backed up regularly to avoid any loss if more serious repairs become necessary.

Taking early steps to assess and plan for repairs can help mitigate long-term impacts on your laptop's functionality. If the problem doesn't seem to worsen, it could remain merely cosmetic, but a professional evaluation is prudent for potential hidden damage.
