Why does my Bluetooth keyboard stop working if I don't boot up my PC for two or more days? I then have to remove the batteries, wait a moment, and only then does the keyboard power back on. Is there a specific key combination to start the keyboard? I do not have a dedicated on/off switch.

Hi @crosswind62,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and feedback. I completely understand your frustration, especially after having a positive experience with your previous HP Envy 32 All-in-One system. Having to remove the keyboard battery after every startup just to restore functionality is certainly not the experience we want you to have.

Since the keyboard is still under warranty and the issue appears to be persistent, I would recommend contacting or visiting an authorized HP service center or HP authorized store in your region. The technical team can fully inspect the keyboard and system behavior, verify whether the issue is related to the keyboard hardware, firmware, or connectivity, and assist with the appropriate resolution.

If the keyboard is confirmed to be defective and the device is within warranty coverage, the service team can help determine eligibility for repair or replacement according to HP warranty terms.

Have a great day!

Hi @crosswind62,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how inconvenient this can be, especially when the keyboard works normally at first but then appears completely unresponsive after the PC has been off for a couple of days.

What you are describing is commonly related to the keyboard entering a deep sleep or low-power state after long periods of inactivity. On some Bluetooth keyboards without a dedicated power switch, removing and reinstalling the batteries essentially forces the keyboard to reset and reconnect.

There usually is not a special key combination required to “turn on” the keyboard again unless the specific keyboard model supports manual pairing shortcuts. In many cases, pressing any key should normally wake it up.

A few things that could be happening:

  • If the batteries remain installed for long periods without use, they can slowly drain even when the keyboard appears inactive.
  • The keyboard firmware may stop responding after extended idle time and only recover after a battery reset.
  • Bluetooth pairing may temporarily fail after the PC has been shut down for several days.

Please also try the following:

  1. Replace the current batteries with a fresh set, even if the existing ones still seem partially charged.
  2. Remove the Bluetooth keyboard from Windows Bluetooth settings and pair it again.
  3. Check whether the issue happens only after the PC remains powered OFF for multiple days.
  4. If available, test the keyboard on another device to see whether the same behavior occurs.

If you can share the exact HP Bluetooth keyboard model, we can also check whether that model supports any manual wake or pairing key combinations and provide more specific guidance.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I have gone through the steps exactly as you described them, but I will have to wait until

after the long weekend to see if these instructions actually work.
If it doesn't work out, I will simply remove the battery from its slot in the future—which is a bit annoying,

but if that's what it takes, then so be it.
I thought there might be a specific key combination to wake up the keyboard, but unfortunately, there isn't.
Despite all that, I would like to thank you for your assistance and wish you a lovely, sunny day.

Hi @crosswind62,

Thank you for the update, and I completely understand. Waiting a couple of days to properly test the behavior makes sense, especially since the issue only appears after the keyboard sits unused for some time.

If removing and reinserting the batteries ends up being the only reliable workaround, I understand how that can become a little inconvenient over time, but at least it does help bring the keyboard back online consistently.

You were absolutely right to ask about a wake-up key combination, as some wireless keyboards do support one, but unfortunately, many Bluetooth models without a dedicated power switch rely entirely on sleep/wake behavior managed internally by the keyboard firmware.

I truly appreciate your patience while troubleshooting this, and thank you as well for the kind words. I hope the keyboard behaves properly after the long weekend and that the issue does not return.

Wishing you a lovely and sunny day as well.

Hello,
I previously owned an HP Envy 32 All-in-One,
which featured a switch on the keyboard that worked beautifully. However, it seems there is a prevailing belief that certain "improvements" offer an advantage—when, in the final analysis, they actually represent a step backward.
Consequently, every time I boot up my HP OmniStudio X 32-c0770ng – 80.01 cm (31.5") All-in-One, I am now forced to reset the keyboard by removing the battery just to get it working again. Forgive me, but the burden this places on the customer is truly outrageous; it practically compels the user to purchase a new keyboard, despite the device still being under warranty.
I have worked in the automotive industry for a good 40 years, and if we were to encounter a defect like this in a vehicle, we would be required to repair or replace the faulty component.
Until now, I have always been very satisfied with HP devices—which is precisely why I chose to purchase one again this time around. However, in the future, I intend to carefully scrutinize the individual components beforehand, regardless of which company's product I am considering buying.
