HP OmniBook Ultra 14 inch Laptop Next Gen AI PC 14-fd0000 (9J387AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My camera stopped working. I followed all the trouble shoot steps. I've even uninstall and reinstalled the windows camera. Nothing seems to work. I contacted Micrsoft support and even they had no success with finding the camera driver for my computer. The only thing that comes up is the Poly Cam but when I try to install it, it fails.

When I open the Device Manager the camera isn't even visible in the list. When I sort by drivers, it come ups. I've selected the update driver option, but nothing changes.

I just bought this laptop and I'm at my wits end. Please someone help me with this issue.  Thank you so much in advance.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're having a frustrating experience with your HP OmniBook Ultra 14 (9J387AV), especially since the camera is not being detected at all. Based on the symptoms you've described, it seems like the camera hardware might not be recognized by the system. Let's go through some troubleshooting steps to identify and potentially resolve the issue.

🔍 Possible Causes and Fixes:

1. Check for Hidden Devices in Device Manager

To reveal any ghost devices that might not be showing up normally:

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Click on View > Show Hidden Devices.
  • Expand sections like Imaging devices, Cameras, or Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Look for anything like "Unknown Device," "USB2.0 HD UVC Webcam," or a grayed-out webcam.
    • If you see a grayed-out entry, let me know the exact name—it might be fixable via a manual driver install.

2. Try BIOS-Level Enablement

Some newer HP laptops allow you to disable the camera at the BIOS level for privacy reasons. To check:

  • Restart the laptop and press Esc repeatedly on boot, then press F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Look under tabs like Security, Advanced, or Built-in Device Options.
  • If there’s a toggle for Integrated Camera or Webcam, make sure it’s enabled.
    • If there's no camera listed at all, it could indicate that the hardware might not be present or is faulty.

3. Check HP Configuration – Was a Webcam Included?

Some commercial HP laptops allow customization, and certain models do not ship with webcams by default. To verify if your model (9J387AV) was supposed to include a webcam:

  • Share the full product number (e.g., 9J387AV#ABC) or go to HP Support Assistant > My Device Specifications and check if "Camera" is listed.
  • Alternatively, run this command in PowerShell and paste the output:

Get-WmiObject -Query "SELECT * FROM Win32_PnPEntity WHERE Description LIKE '%camera%'"

4. HP Drivers

Visit HP’s site directly for your exact configuration:

  • Go to the HP Drivers - OmniBook Ultra 14-fd0000 series page.
  • Search for Camera, Imaging, or Poly Camera drivers.
  • If you try to install the Poly Camera driver and it fails, it may mean the hardware isn’t present or detected, which again hints at either a disabled BIOS camera or no hardware.

5. Last Resort: HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics

To rule out hardware failure:

  • Turn off your laptop.
  • Turn it back on and immediately press Esc, then F2 for HP Diagnostics.
  • Go to Component Tests > Camera or Video (if available) and run a test.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Max,

Thank you for your detailed response. I checked the hidden devices is the camera icon is greyed out. Here are the names:  HP 9MP Camera & HP IR Camera.

I am currently trying the next step, checking the BIOS. I will let you know if that helps.

Truly appreciate your assistance with this.

Hello again Max,

I followed all the steps 1-3. I was able to reinstall the poly camera from the HP site  this time.  When I open the camera it does show the error message anymore.  It shows the poly camera word bur the screen is black. I have the camera enabled on my computer.(see photo)

I went back to the device manager and norice that the camera is now listed but it only shows the poly camera in the menu. (See photo)

I checked the hidden devices and saw the option to update driver for  the HP 9MP Camera & HP IR Camera (See photo). When I click the option nothing happens.

Please let me know what to do from here, if you know. Thank you so much!

UPDATE:

So I did the final step of running the test. Everything passed. When the computer restarted, I checked the camera and its working again. Thank you sooo much Max.

I believe reinstalling the poly camera and clicking the reinstall/update driver option in the hidden devices tab is what did it. Had I restarted the computer right after, the camera probably would've came up. I did the last step just to be extra sure. Grateful to you 😊💜
