HP ENVY Desktop PC TE01-3000i (4M0M1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I needed extra storage for my new Envy PC to transfer data from old PC. I installed WD 8TB HDD and attached cables. Disk management does not recognize the new HDD. BIOS recognizes it and indicates everthing is normal. Did I miss doing something? I called WD support and they said to contact HP to see iof there's a compatibility issue.

@cliftonjack, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for all the details—you're already on the right track by checking both BIOS and cabling. Since the BIOS recognizes the 8TB WD HDD but Windows Disk Management doesn’t, the issue is unlikely to be with hardware compatibility. The HP Envy TE01-3197c does support large capacity SATA drives, so no known compatibility issues there.

Let’s walk through a few checks to get this drive working:

Step-by-Step Fix:

1. Open Disk Management with Admin Rights

  • Right-click Start > select Disk Management.
  • Look for a disk that says “Not Initialized” or “Unallocated.”

If the drive is there:

  • Right-click > Initialize Disk (choose GPT for drives over 2TB).
  • Then right-click the unallocated space > New Simple Volume > format.

2. Still not showing up? Try Device Manager

>Press Win + X > select Device Manager.

>Expand Disk Drives – do you see the WD 8TB listed?

  • If yes, right-click > Uninstall device, then Scan for hardware changes.
  • You can also update the driver (even if it says “best driver is already installed”).

3. Use DiskPart (in case of corruption or partition issues)

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator, then type:
    diskpart
    list disk

  • Do you see the 8TB disk listed?
  • If yes, type:

select disk X   (replace X with the number of your WD drive)
clean

⚠️ This will erase everything on the drive – only use if the drive is brand new or you're okay wiping it.

Then go back to Disk Management and initialize/format it.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
