Microsoft Windows 11

I just bought a new laptop and can't get dual screen displays on both screens, my laptop and my external monitor.  The external monitor keeps telling me that I have to change settings to 1280 x1024 60 Hz but this is what I have it set at in Settings>Display.  It has always been those numbers.  External monitor keeps saying it is set on 1400 x 1050.  I can get screen on my external monitor but not on both external monitor and laptop.

Any ideas, anyone?  Any suggestions would be appreciated. Microsoft is out of ideas on this.  They think there is something wrong with the external monitor but I don't, because it works fine on my other, old computer.

I talked to HP tech today and he suggested I get a new HDMI cable; he said they die just like everything else.  What do you think?
