HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-fd1000 (917T6AV)

I have an external HP monitor and a brand new HP laptop.  I can't get dual screen displays even though I have the settings on 1280 x 1024 as the monitor tells me to.  It has always worked with the last two laptops; first one was HP and next one was Lenovo.  There are two ports on the back of the external monitor.  I unplugged it from one and plugged it into the other one and it worked for a day but I turned the computer off overnight and the next morning it was gone.  HP tech told me I might need a new HDMI cable, as they die just like everything else.  I also read that I might need a different adaptor.  I didn't need an adaptor when I had the original HP laptop but had to get one for the Lenovo.  I have tried removing the adaptor and reattaching the HDMI cable but that doesn't work at all.

Best Buy said to bring "all the devices" to them.  I can easily put the laptop in a backpack but the big, cumbersome, heavy monitor would have to be put into a grocery cart and on and off a bus and streetcar to get to them, so that's not really an option.

If anyone has any knowledge of this problem, I'd really appreciate your imput.

From the following information

          https://support.hp.com/au-en/product/product-specs/hp-15.6-inch-laptop-pc-15-fd1000/model/2101987725

Its specs :    https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/ish_9868351-9868447-16

It has

(1) USB Type-C® 3.2 Gen 2.0 port; 10 Gbps signaling rate (USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 1.2, HP Sleep and Charge)

(2) USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports; 5 Gbps signaling rate

(1) Headphone/microphone combo port

(1) HDMI 1.4b port

(1) AC smart pin

How do you connect your monitor now, what is it ? You should be able to connect 2 (two) external monitors (total 3) to your machine

  1. Monitor 1: Direct HDMI to HDMI
  2. Monitor 2: USB-C to DP adapter to monitor OR direct USB-C to USB-C monitor.

Regards.

My external monitor connects by HDMI cable directly from it to laptop.  I did remove it and plug in a usb cable but it didn't work at all.
