My desktop PC will not connect to my external monitor.  This happened right after I bought it in 2022, and HP took weeks to fix it.  Now the same problem is back. Monitor works fine with 2 laptops and 3 different HDMI cables.

@Cpark-28_7, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding External Monitor Connection Issues with Desktop PC!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It can be frustrating when your external monitor doesn’t connect to your desktop PC, especially after it previously took a considerable time to resolve. Below are some steps and considerations:

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

Check Connections:

  • Ensure that the HDMI cable is securely connected to both the monitor and the desktop PC.

Verify Port Functionality:

  • If your desktop PC has multiple HDMI ports, try connecting the monitor to a different port.

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support website (HP Driver and Software Updates) and ensure you have the latest drivers installed for your desktop PC, including graphics drivers.

Adjust Display Settings:

  • Go to your desktop’s display settings:
    • For Windows 10: Right-click on the desktop, select Display Settings.
    • For Windows 8/8.1: Move your cursor to the top-right corner, select Devices, and then Second screen.
    • For Windows 7: Right-click on the desktop, select Screen Resolution.

Monitor Detection:

  • In the Display Settings menu, click on Detect to see if the PC can detect and identify the monitor.

Configure Multiple Displays:

  • Ensure the settings are such that the external monitor is configured as required (extend, duplicate, or make it the main display).

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

None of those options was helpful.  After 2.5 days and dozens and dozens of manual hard reboots, I got the PC to connect to the monitor long enough to update the BIOS and all drivers.  But when I put it to sleep,  the connection was cut. I've spent the past 3 days trying to get the machine to connect with the monitor again.  The PC has only 1 HDMI port, so I bought a USB-HDMI cable.  That didn't work, either! This is extremely frustrating, especially because the PC works well when I can actually SEE the display.
