@Fhj307,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

A large white box in the middle of your screen could be caused either by a software issue (a stuck process or app) or a hardware problem (display panel or graphics issue). Let’s try some quick steps to narrow it down:

1. Rule out simple software glitches:

  • Restart the laptop – fully shut it down, wait 10 seconds, and restart. Sometimes a “ghost window” or frozen process can cause this.

  • Try Safe Mode – Restart and repeatedly tap F11 (or Shift + Restart) > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Safe Mode.

    • If the white box does not appear in Safe Mode, it’s most likely a software/driver issue.

2. Check for stuck apps or overlays:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

  • Look under Processes – see if there’s a program running that might be causing the white box (e.g., graphics utilities, third-party apps).

  • Right-click and End Task on suspicious or unneeded apps.

3. Update the system:

  • Run Windows Update and install all updates.

  • Update your graphics drivers (Intel, AMD, or Nvidia – depending on your laptop model). You can get them via HP Support Assistant or HP’s driver page.

4. Test the display itself:

  • Connect the laptop to an external monitor or TV with HDMI.

    • If the external display looks normal, the issue may be with the laptop’s screen panel.

    • If the external display also shows the white box, it’s more likely a software/graphics driver issue.

5. If the problem persists:

  • Try a System Restore to a date before the problem started.

  • If it’s still there, it may point to a hardware problem with the display. In that case, you’ll need HP service to inspect or replace the panel. It may be helpful to check your warranty status.

Next step for you: Could you please let me know whether the white box also shows up when:

  1. You enter Safe Mode, and

  2. You connect to an external monitor?

That will tell me whether it’s a software glitch or a hardware issue.

Kind Regards,
