Linux

Hi All,

HP EliteDesk 705 G4 was complaining about system time not being right, 005 message a couple of times, then sent me back to the GRUB prompt where I could type some commands and boot Linux.

I changed the CMOS battery, now no USB power, so no keyboard or mouse. I switched to the original unused HP supplied keyboard, I have also tried every combination of power off, hold down power button etc, no USB power to front or rear ports, can’t get into the BIOS either. This leaves me with a £900 brick.

Any help welcome.

Hi @klickonn,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Since the USB ports stopped providing power immediately after the CMOS battery replacement, and you've already tried a different keyboard and both front and rear USB ports, I'd recommend checking the internal connections before attempting further troubleshooting.

Could you please confirm whether the power button LED and other system indicators turn on when you start the EliteDesk 705 G4? Also, when you power it on, do you hear any beep codes or observe any blinking LED patterns?

This information will help narrow down the next steps, particularly since you currently cannot access the BIOS.

Best regards,

Hi

The power LED comes on, there are no beeps. I think the LED to the left of the power button blinks intermittently.

Thanks

Hi @klickonn,

Thank you for confirming.

Since the power LED turns on but the USB ports remain unresponsive after the CMOS battery replacement, and you have noticed an intermittent blinking indicator, the system may be encountering a hardware initialization issue.

Please try these checks:

Check the CMOS battery installation:

Disconnect the power cable, then verify that the CR2032 battery is seated correctly and that its holder is secure.

Inspect internal connections:

If you are comfortable working inside the desktop, disconnect the power cable and check that the RAM modules and any internal connections disturbed during the battery replacement are properly seated.

Avoid touching components unnecessarily.

Observe the blinking indicator:

Please note the exact pattern, including the number of blinks and whether they repeat in a sequence.

If possible, share a short video of the indicator.

If the USB ports still have no power and you cannot access the BIOS, the system may need further hardware diagnosis.

Best regards,
Kuroi_Kenshi
