I've got a HP Omnibook X Flip LaptopNGAI 14-fm0505na which was purchased as a Christmas present for our 14 year old. After researching I also bought the HP 700 rechargeable multi pen to use with it as he likes doing graphic design etc. - this pen came up as compatible and recommended.

I thought it would be simple to setup... oh how I was wrong. I cannot get the pen to connect via Bluetooth (it doesn't show on any device on Bluetooth), and I can't seem to even get it to work at all - it was working as a stylus without Bluetooth for a bit (albeit no idea why/what was different when it did work), but is no longer working.

I have fully charged it, made sure all drivers are updated using windows up and HP support app, I've put it in pairing mode multiple times and spent hours on the Internet checking all the troubleshooting, which seems to suggest this pen should be working. Have I been misled and this pen (being a HP pen) doesn't work with its own brand of laptop?

Appreciate any support or advice, albeit not sure what else there is I can do other than return it.

Thanks

Just to clarify, I am aware that the Bluetooth function is for the buttons. Whilst that won't connect at all, the actual stylus just doesn't appear to be connecting consistently (my HP app shows it though) so it's a struggle to use it with the touchscreen.

Hi @RudiWeb,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  1. When the pen was working as a stylus without Bluetooth, was it responding on the screen at all, or only in certain apps?
  2. Does your HP Omnibook X Flip have active pen support listed in its specs, or is it a touchscreen-only device?
  3. Have you tried pairing the pen with any other device (like another compatible HP device) to see if the issue is with the pen itself?
  4. When you put the pen in pairing mode, do any lights flash on it to indicate it’s ready?

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  • Confirm Windows Ink and Pen Settings: Go to Settings → Devices → Pen & Windows Ink. Make sure the pen is recognized and that all pen features are enabled.
  • Reset the pen: Hold the pairing button (if your model has one) for a few seconds to reset it, then try pairing again.
  • Check Bluetooth version compatibility: Some HP pens require Bluetooth 4.0 or later. Make sure your laptop supports the required Bluetooth version.
  • Remove old pairings: If the pen was paired with another device before, remove it from that device’s Bluetooth list it may not pair with a new device until it’s cleared.
  • Use HP Support Assistant: Sometimes HP provides firmware updates specifically for pens and touchscreens open HP Support Assistant, check for updates, and apply any available for the pen or touchscreen.
  • Test pen on another app: Open a basic program like Microsoft Whiteboard or OneNote to see if the pen responds at all.

    I hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for the response.

So a slight update - I think I've got the pen working as a stylus more consistently as the key seems to be having the laptop in "tablet" mode rather than as a laptop, which for whatever reason seems to detect the pen better, which is fine as that's generally how you'd use the pen anyway.  What constantly throws it out though is when I try and pair it with Bluetooth, which is still not working at all but pairing mode then seems to stop the pen working as a stylus and it's a bit of a pain to get back (turning off and on again and eventually seems to detect)  - bit weird.

In answer to your questions:

1. As above.

2. Yes I believe so based on the model - the specs even suggest the model will sometimes come with a pen (not this pen, but a cheaper version) depending on the model you purchase - guessing higher end setups come with a pen as standard.

3. Yes, in the sense of bluetooth anyway - I don't have any other devices that accept active pens, but I cannot get the pen to show as a bluetooth device on any device which to me seems odd.

4. Yes, hold the two buttons for  circa 5 seconds and a solid white light indicates for a few seconds which means it's in pairing mode according to the instructions, and this seems to be what the pen does.

In terms of troubleshooting:

- As above, seems to be showing now and I can detect the  pen.

- Have tried this based on what I can find online, which suggests I hold the two buttons for like 15 seconds but to be honest nothing different seems to happen (the pairing indicator goes on at around 5 seconds).

-  Yes, the laptop has 5.4 Bluetooth and the pen and laptop are both new, so hadn't noticed previous devices paired.

- Have done this.

- As above, seems to generally be working across the laptop now  when it is in tablet mode albeit pairing mode seems to kick it out.

Appreciate any further support - it does seem to me to be an issue with the Bluetooth function on the pen itself.

Thanks

Hi @RudiWeb

Thanks for replying.

Deep_World is away for now; however, I'm Hawks_Eye, and I'll be happy to help you out!

I can see how much effort you’ve already put into this, and it’s frustrating when something that should feel seamless ends up being inconsistent. You’ve done the right things—charging, updating drivers, checking Bluetooth, and even testing tablet mode—and that shows real persistence.

Let’s go step by step to stabilize both the stylus function and the Bluetooth pairing:

1. Confirm Active Pen Support

Your HP Omnibook X Flip does support active pens, but the stylus function works through the touchscreen digitizer, not Bluetooth. Bluetooth is only for the shortcut buttons. That’s why the pen can still draw even if it doesn’t appear in Bluetooth devices.

2. Stabilize Stylus Detection

  • Switch the laptop into tablet mode before using the pen. This ensures Windows Ink services prioritize pen input.
  • Go to Settings > Devices > Pen & Windows Ink and confirm “Ignore touch input when I’m using my pen” is enabled. This prevents touch interference.
  • Test the pen in apps like OneNote or Whiteboard to confirm consistent detection.

3. Bluetooth Pairing for Buttons

  • Hold both buttons for ~5 seconds until the white light appears. That’s pairing mode.
  • Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth and wait for “HP Rechargeable MPP 700 Pen” to appear.
  • If it doesn’t show, clear any old pairings: press and hold both buttons for 15 seconds to reset the pen.
  • Try pairing again immediately after reset.

4. Firmware and Driver Updates

HP occasionally provides firmware updates for pens and touchscreens.

  • Open the HP App (formerly HP Smart) or HP Support Assistant.
  • Run updates for “System Firmware” and “Input Devices.”
  • Restart the laptop after applying updates.

5. Recovery Steps if Pairing Disrupts Stylus

If entering pairing mode temporarily disables the stylus:

  • Turn the pen off and back on.
  • Toggle the laptop between tablet and laptop mode once.
  • This refreshes the digitizer and usually restores pen input.

By following these steps, you should be able to keep the stylus working reliably in tablet mode and get the Bluetooth buttons paired for shortcuts. Since you’ve already narrowed down the issue, the reset and firmware update steps are the most likely to resolve the Bluetooth side.
