When I turn my computer on the first screen display the HP logo is very distorted. When it boots up the screen shakes, is cloudy, and displays a thick purple line through the center with a purple section about four inches deep below the line. I've tried rebooting, but doesn't change. Any idea why this is happening and how I fix it myself?

Hi @PaulDTaylor, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The display issue you're describing—distorted HP logo, screen shaking, cloudiness, and thick purple lines—suggests either a hardware problem with the display panel or a GPU-related issue. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and potentially fix it yourself:
Step 1: Check if it's a Hardware or Software Issue
Boot into BIOS
- Turn off the PC, then turn it back on and immediately press F10 repeatedly to enter the BIOS menu.
- If the distortion appears in BIOS, it's likely a hardware issue (faulty display or GPU). If the BIOS screen looks fine, it might be a software or driver problem.
Connect an External Monitor
- Plug in an external monitor via HDMI or VGA.
- If the external display works fine, then your All-in-One’s screen or display cable is faulty.
- If the issue appears on both screens, it could be a graphics driver or GPU issue.
Step 2: Troubleshoot Software Issues (If External Display Works Fine)
Boot into Safe Mode
- Restart and press F8 or Shift + Restart → Choose Advanced options > Startup Settings > Enable Safe Mode.
- If the screen appears normal in Safe Mode, then the issue is likely a driver conflict.
Update Graphics Drivers
- Open Device Manager (Press Win + X, then select Device Manager).
- Expand Display Adapters → Right-click on your graphics driver → Update driver.
- If the issue persists, try uninstalling the driver and reinstalling the latest one from HP’s website.
Check Windows Display Settings
- Right-click on the desktop → Select Display Settings.
- Make sure resolution is set to the recommended value.
Step 3: Fix Hardware Issues (If Distortion Appears in BIOS & External Display Works)
Check the Display Cable (Internal Ribbon Cable Issue)
- The display cable inside your All-in-One could be loose or damaged. If comfortable, open the back panel and reseat the LCD cable.
Replace the Display Panel (If Screen is Physically Damaged)
- If there's a permanent thick purple line, the LCD panel might be failing. You may need to replace the screen.
Check for GPU/Chipset Overheating
- If the problem worsens over time, the GPU might be overheating. Clean the internal cooling vents with compressed air.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
