I plug wired headphones into my PC and they don't play sound nor does the computer show that it is picking up the device.

Hi @Jake298,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your PC is not detecting wired headphones when plugged into the headphone jack. Let’s go through a few checks.

To fix a non-responsive HP PC headphone jack, first clean the port with compressed air and test the headset on another device to rule out hardware failure. If the hardware works, restart your computer, update audio drivers in Device Manager, and set headphones as the default playback device in Sound Settings.

  • Inspect the jack for bent prongs, and use compressed air or a soft brush to remove dust or lint.
  • Perform a full restart (not a shutdown) to clear temporary glitches.
  • Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar, open Sound Settings, and ensure the device isn't disabled under Manage Sound Devices.
  • Open Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click your audio driver (e.g., Realtek High Definition Audio), and select Update driver or Uninstall device (restart PC to reinstall).
  • If your HP uses Realtek, open the Realtek Audio Console/Manager, go to connector settings, and ensure it is set to recognize headphones when plugged in.
  • If on a desktop, try the rear green audio jack directly on the motherboard instead of the front panel.
