wireless computer - when I try to open a word document, I get a message asking me to buy some software or continue with free version.  I can't find my document when I click on the free version.  I found a way around this, but I would prefer making word the default.  That hasn't worked.

@Gray7472, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check Office Activation Status

Before setting it as default, make sure Microsoft Word is actually installed and activated:

Open Word from the Start Menu.

Click File > Account (or Help).

Look for the Product Information section:

If it says “Product Activated”, you're good.

If it says “View only” or “Unlicensed”, you'll need to activate it or purchase a license.

If you don’t have a license and don’t want to pay, consider using Word Online at office.com instead, which is free and cloud-based.

Set Microsoft Word as the Default App for .docx Files

If Word is installed and activated, follow these steps:

Option 1: Use "Open with" Menu

Right-click any .docx file.

Click Open with > Choose another app.

Select Microsoft Word.

Check the box: Always use this app to open .docx files.

Click OK.

Option 2: Set Defaults via Settings

Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps.

Search for Word in the list.

Scroll down and make sure .docx is associated with Word.

If not, click and change it.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
