Yes, you can replace only one ink cartridge in your HP Deskjet 2540 All-in-One printer. The printer uses two ink cartridges: one black and one tri-color (cyan, magenta, and yellow).
Ink cartridges
To remove the ink cartridges:
Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center of the HP Deskjet All-in-One printer.
Press down to release each ink cartridge and then remove it from the slot.
Pull each print cartridge toward you out of its slot.
