Like the subject says. Don't know how to fix this. Installed both direct x, direct x runtime and visual C+ runtime. This is on a brand new system with windows updates already completed so just wondering what else I can do? What I'm trying to run are RPG maker games like Pokémon Uranium and Pokémon Z.

Hi @monto2

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you are receiving a “DLL initialization routine failed” error when trying to launch RPG Maker games such as Pokémon Uranium and Pokémon Z, even though DirectX, DirectX Runtime, Visual C++ Runtime, and Windows Updates have already been installed.

Since this is a new Windows 11 system, I recommend repairing the Windows system components first rather than manually downloading or replacing individual DLL files. Also I could request you to please share the picture of the error displayed.

1. Run the System File Checker

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Select Yes if prompted by User Account Control.
  3. Enter the following command:

sfc /scannow

  1. Press Enter and allow the scan to complete.
  2. Do not close the window while the verification is in progress.
  3. Once completed, note whether Windows reports that it found and repaired corrupted files.

2. Run the DISM repair

After SFC has completed, enter the following command in the same administrator window:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Press Enter and allow the process to finish. This may take some time.
  2. Once DISM completes, restart the computer.
  3. After restarting, run the game again.

If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, you can run the DISM command first, restart the computer, and then run sfc /scannow again.

3. Check the game installation

  • Because the problem occurs with specific RPG Maker games, the error may also be related to a missing or incompatible runtime component required by the particular game.
  • If the games were downloaded from an unofficial or third-party source, I recommend obtaining a clean copy from the game's legitimate distribution source and reinstalling it. Avoid downloading individual DLL files from random DLL-download websites.
  • If the game provides its own required runtime or installation package, install that runtime rather than manually copying DLL files into C:\Windows\System32.

4. Check the exact DLL mentioned in the error

  • The exact error message is important because “DLL initialization routine failed” is a generic error and does not identify the underlying component by itself.
  • If the error names a specific DLL, please provide the complete error message, including the DLL name. This will help determine whether the problem is related to Windows, Visual C++ Runtime, DirectX, or the RPG Maker game itself.
  • Since the system is brand new and Windows Update is already completed, I would start with SFC → DISM → restart → test the game again rather than repeatedly reinstalling DirectX or Visual C++.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
