Another update: I disabled Vari-Bright, but the next time I booted up my laptop it did the same thing again. Event viewer shows some warnings, which was right around the time of a freeze:

Screenshot 2025-09-17 160307.png

I checked the Lid Switch with a magnet, but the system didn't respond to this (which makes sense since I set it up to "do nothing" when the lid closes). I also did a Hardware Diagnostics check outside Windows, which showed that all systems were OK. I disabled all non-Microsoft services, but the freeze still happened.

Also something I noticed the last couple of times: the color profile of the system seems to change tight after the "freeze" occurs. Moreover, all system color profiles have completely disappeared from my settings, so I am not able to choose a standard color profile anymore. Could this be a related issue?

Thanks for all the help!

Hello there - I am having the exact same problem, with the exact same laptop. It's almost word for word the same issue. Done all the steps provided, but still having the same intermittent issues. Any help beyond what has already been advised is massively appreciated as it's causing serious problems. Looks like it is a problem only centered on this laptop model?

One thing I'd also like to add, is that it's also rendered using Microsoft Edge or Chrome pointless. The lag is too much but curiously, Firefox works just fine. Not sure why this is so, and if that gives any clues as to what is going on, but thought it was worth flagging. I'd appreciate a response on this as soon as possible.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your screen that locks up!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I hear you—it’s incredibly frustrating when your screen locks up and the only “reset” is opening and closing the lid. Add in the lag on certain browsers, and it definitely feels like your laptop is fighting against you. Let’s try narrowing this down:

Update graphics drivers – Head to HP Support Assistant or Device Manager and check for the latest GPU drivers (both Intel + dedicated card if present). Outdated drivers often trigger these freezing/lag issues.

Check Windows power settings – Go to Control Panel > Power Options, set it to High Performance and adjust display sleep/graphics power to Maximum performance.

Run HP diagnostics – Restart, tap F2, and run the System Tests (especially graphics + memory). This helps rule out deeper hardware issues.

Browser-specific lag – Since Firefox works fine but Edge/Chrome stutter, try disabling hardware acceleration in Chrome/Edge (Settings > System > Use hardware acceleration → toggle off).

If none of that helps, I’d suggest updating the BIOS as well—sometimes display freezes are tied to firmware conflicts.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

This is a joke right? You were already helping me. I've sent you a private message in response to your private message to me, so please reply to that.

I seem to have solved this problem (for now) - i disabled the graphics driver in device manager (display adaptors), tested it and everything worked fine, so definitely a graphics problem. I then downloaded an older version of the graphics driver from the AMD support page (the one i downloaded was from August 2024 - the 24.8.1 edition), and it works perfectly, no lagging, no freezes.

Strange how AMD haven't sorted this yet with their recent updates, especially considering the amount of people raising this issue.

Where exactly did you find this older driver? I only get redirected to installing something like AMD Adrenalin, that automatically installs all latest drivers 😞

This is the driver link to they are referring to: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.8.1 Release Notes

I did this method and although it works better than the newest one,  there were still issues, such as freezing. So instead, I disabled my graphics driver because I don't usually don't do lots of graphically intensive work on my laptop.

Hope this helps!

I do in fact need my graphics driver, so unfortunately that is not an option for me. It's just so frustrating that I have no idea which apps will/ will not work and cause the lag! Honestly, this is supposed to be a "premium" laptop. With a "premium" laptop, I would expect "premium" service if anything does not work. I have not heard anything from HP since...
