Subject: Battery Health Concern - HP EliteBook 830 13 inch G9 (Rapid Capacity Loss)

Hello HP Support Team,

I'm writing to report a battery health concern on my HP EliteBook 830 13 inch G9 Notebook PC.

Device details:
- Computer name: ADIL-IMRAN
- BIOS: U70 Ver. 01.18.01 (05/03/2026)
- Battery: Primary, Hewlett-Packard, Li-Ion, Serial 00413

According to the Windows battery report generated on my device:
- Design Capacity: 38,017 mWh
- Current Full Charge Capacity: 31,868 mWh (approximately 84% of design capacity)
- Cycle Count: 348

This capacity loss has occurred in under a year of use, and the battery report's own estimate shows my current active-use battery life has dropped to roughly 4 hours at full charge, well below what this model is rated for. I've also observed drain events where the battery loses 35-60% of its charge within about an hour of active use.

I've already checked for abnormal background processes and adjusted my power settings, but the degradation rate still seems unusually fast for this model and age.

Could you please advise on next steps, including whether this qualifies for a warranty battery replacement? I'm happy to attach the full battery report (powercfg /batteryreport) if needed.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,
Adil Imran

Hi  @theadilimran

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out . I understand your concern regarding the battery capacity reduction and the shorter runtime you're experiencing on your HP EliteBook notebook. I will be glad to help you with this.

From the details you've shared, I can see that the battery currently reports approximately 84% of its original design capacity with a cycle count of 348. While battery wear naturally occurs over time, we'd like to better understand the situation and verify whether the behaviour you're observing is within expected parameters.

Kindly confirm the below details :

  • Does the battery drain occur during specific activities such as video conferencing, streaming, browsing, or while the system is idle?
  • Have you run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Battery Test? If yes, what was the result?

In the meantime, kindly try the below steps and confirm :

  1. Run HP Battery Diagnostics - Click here for steps
    • Open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows.
    • Select Component Tests -Power -Battery.
    • Run the test and note any result code or recommendations displayed.
  2. Optimize Power Settings
    • Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery.
    • Select Best Power Efficiency when battery life is a priority.
    • Reduce screen brightness and disable unnecessary startup applications.
  3. Perform a Battery Calibration - Click here for steps
    • Charge the battery to 100%.
    • Use the notebook until the battery reaches approximately 5-10%.
    • Recharge it uninterrupted back to 100%.
    • This can help ensure capacity reporting remains accurate.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

Thank you for the detailed response. Here are the details you asked for:

1) When does the drain occur?
Even at idle, with screen brightness set to 0, the battery drops approximately 1% every 2 minutes. When actively working (browsing, apps open), it drops faster - around 1.5% per minute. So the drain happens both at idle and under load, not just during heavy tasks like video calls or streaming.

2) HP PC Hardware Diagnostics - Battery Test
I ran this test as instructed. The result came back as "Perfect" / Pass, with no error codes or issues flagged.

I also completed the recommended steps:
- Power plan set to Best Power Efficiency
- Screen brightness at 0
- Unnecessary startup apps disabled

Despite this, the drain rate at idle (1% per 2 minutes) still seems high for this model, and the diagnostic passing as "Perfect" doesn't match the real-world battery life or the ~84% capacity reading I shared earlier.

Could you let me know what the next step would be, since hardware diagnostics shows no fault but actual usage clearly shows abnormal drain? I'd like to understand if this points to a software/driver issue, or if a warranty battery replacement should still be considered given the fast capacity loss (84% at 348 cycles within under a year).

Looking forward to your guidance.

Best regards,
Adil Imran

Hi @theadilimran,

Thanks for your response and Thank you for the update and for completing all the recommended steps. Based on the information you've provided, the battery test passing as "Perfect" indicates that HP's hardware diagnostics do not currently detect a battery failure. However, a battery drain rate of approximately 1% every 2 minutes while idle is not typical behaviour and suggests that the issue may be related to power consumption from software, drivers, firmware, or background processes rather than the battery hardware itself.

To help isolate the cause, kindly try the following:

Generate a Windows Battery Report

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Run:  powercfg /batteryreport
  • The report will be saved and will provide detailed information about battery usage and applications consuming power.

Regarding the 84% remaining capacity at 348 charge cycles, some reduction is expected as a battery ages; however, battery replacement are generally based on diagnostic results and warranty terms rather than capacity percentage alone.

Hi @theadilimran

Thanks for your response and Thank you for sharing the battery report for your HP EliteBook 830 G9 Notebook PC. I understand your concern regarding the battery performance, and I'll be glad to help review the information.

Based on the battery report:

Design Capacity: 38,017 mWh

Current Full Charge Capacity: 31,451 mWh

Battery Cycle Count: 352

From the report, The battery is currently retaining approximately 82.7% of its original design capacity, which indicates normal wear over time. However, with a cycle count of 352, some reduction in battery runtime is expected as the battery ages.

Since you have already:

  • Passed the HP Battery Test with no failure IDs
  • Set the power mode to Best Power Efficiency
  • Reduced screen brightness
  • Disabled unnecessary startup applications

and you are still experiencing concerns with battery performance, I would recommend having the notebook examined at an authorized HP Service Center. Our certified technicians can provide a thorough diagnosis and offer the best solutions to address the issue.
