Hi there. PC keeps waking from sleep mode. There are no alarms set and digging deeper via the Using Command Prompt & Event Viewer, neither will identify the issue.

Also, when the PC does wake up it will not open the second display.  I have to press the 'detect' button on the System > Display 10 times and then it will find it. However, then it will not find the correct resolution. I have to spend 10 minutes faffing about before I can sort it out. The cable is new.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi @Kev1y

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I can understand how frustrating it must be to have your PC wake unexpectedly and then struggle with the second display. You’ve already done a lot of careful digging with Command Prompt and Event Viewer, so let’s build on that with some structured steps to calm the system down and get the display behaving consistently.

Step 1: Prevent Devices from Waking the PC

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Right‑click your active adapter > Properties > Power Management tab.
  4. Uncheck Allow this device to wake the computer.
  5. Repeat for Keyboards and Mice under Human Interface Devices if available.

Step 2: Adjust Wake Timers

  1. Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  2. Click Change plan settings next to your active plan.
  3. Select Change advanced power settings.
  4. Expand Sleep > Allow wake timers.
  5. Set to Disable.

Step 3: Update Graphics Drivers

Since the second display is not detected properly after waking:

  1. Press Windows + X > Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right‑click your graphics card > Update driver > Search automatically.
  4. Restart the PC after update.

You can also download the latest drivers directly from HP’s support page:
HP Software and Driver Downloads

Step 4: Reconfigure Display Settings

  1. Right‑click the desktop > Display settings.
  2. Scroll down and click Advanced display settings.
  3. Select the second monitor and manually set the correct resolution.
  4. Click Apply.

Step 5: Test with Clean HDMI/DisplayPort Setup

  1. Disconnect the second display cable.
  2. Power off both PC and monitor.
  3. Reconnect firmly and power on.
  4. Check if the monitor is detected automatically.

These steps should help reduce the unwanted wake‑ups and stabilize your second display.
