My laptop shuts down unprompted at random times. Also, sometimes the start button light flashes slowly on and off and I can't get the screen up

@MichaelF1961, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP Envy x360 14" 2-in-1 Laptop (14-fa0000) is shutting down randomly and sometimes shows a slow blinking power button light, with the screen not turning on. Let's walk through some steps to diagnose and resolve this.
Perform a Hard Reset
This helps clear any residual electrical charge that might be causing power issues:
- Turn off the laptop completely.
- Unplug the AC adapter.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the power adapter and try turning it on.
Check for Overheating or Hardware Issues
Random shutdowns can be caused by overheating or hardware faults:
- Ensure the vents are clean and not blocked.
- Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open diagnostics.
- Run the System Test and Battery Test.
Update BIOS and Drivers
Outdated firmware can cause instability:
- Open the HP Support Page for your model.
- Download and install the latest BIOS, chipset, and graphics drivers.
Check Windows Event Viewer
To identify what’s triggering the shutdown:
- Press Win + X → Event Viewer.
- Go to Windows Logs > System and look for Critical or Error entries around the time of shutdown.
Power Button Light Blinking (Sleep Mode or Fault?)
A slow blinking light often indicates Sleep Mode. If the screen doesn’t wake:
- Try pressing Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the display driver.
- Connect to an external monitor to check if the display is the issue.
Battery and Adapter Check
Use the HP Support Assistant to test battery health:
- Download: HP Support Assistant | HP® Support
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
