Had my lovely Omnia 3 weeks. Good setup instructions in the box. However, there was also a cable which did not feature in the paperwork. I attached it to matching ports on the PC and stand. Any ideas what it does? Also, stand USB ports do not seem to work. I suspect I have not connected the PC to the stand properly. All suggestions gratefully received.

Hi @DocAS52

Welcome to the HP Support Community! Thanks for posting your query!

We're here to help you get back up and running.

I hear you—it can be confusing when a cable is included but not explained in the setup guide, especially if the stand’s USB ports aren’t working as expected. Before we narrow down what that mystery cable does and why the ports aren’t active, let’s gather a bit more detail so we can isolate the issue clearly.

Could you share:

  • The exact model name or number of your Omni system (for example, HP Omni desktop or monitor variant).
  • What type of cable it looks like—USB, HDMI, DisplayPort, or something else?
  • Which ports on the PC and stand you connected it to (shape, labeling, or icon)?
  • Are the stand’s USB ports completely unresponsive, or do they show power but fail to recognize devices?
  • Do you have any other peripherals connected to the PC at the same time?

With these details, we’ll be able to determine whether the cable is meant for USB hub functionality, video passthrough, or power, and why the stand’s USB ports aren’t currently active.

Dear Hawks_Eye

I appreciate your time and effort in helping!

The machine is an Omnistudio X31.5 all in One Desktop

AFAIK the cable is for a USB C port (as defined in the specs) connected to sockets on the machine and stand (removing the cable makes no difference). I looked up images of the ports and this seems to be the chap)

Stand ports are dead as a dodo i.e. no lights when I plug in an external drive. The ports on the back of the machine work perfectly.

There is a Logitech sound system attached to the ‘other’ USB port on the back of the machine, which works fine. (I think the integrated sound is fine, but my son pursues sound perfection).

The machine works perfectly well and looks fine – this is the point… one does not wish to splash out on a Ferrari and then have unexplained wires hanging out!

Again, thanks for your assistance!

You are welcome @DocAS52

I understand how puzzling it feels to have a cable included that isn’t explained in the documentation, especially when the stand’s USB ports aren’t responding.

Thank you for confirming the model—your Omnistudio X31.5 All‑in‑One—and for describing how you connected the cable. That helps narrow things down.

What the cable is likely for

The USB‑C cable you mentioned is designed to link the PC to the stand so that the stand’s USB hub ports become active. Without this connection, the stand ports remain inactive. If removing the cable makes no difference, it suggests either:

  • The cable isn’t seated correctly at both ends.
  • The stand requires a specific upstream port (often marked with a USB symbol or “Upstream”) rather than a general USB‑C port.
  • Drivers for the USB hub may not yet be installed or recognized by Windows.

Steps to check and restore functionality

Reconnect carefully

  • Disconnect the USB‑C cable from both the PC and stand.
  • Reconnect firmly, ensuring it clicks into place.
  • Use the port on the stand labeled for upstream connection (often near the base or marked with a square USB symbol).

Test with another USB‑C cable

  • If possible, try a different USB‑C cable to rule out a faulty one.
  • Not all USB‑C cables support data transfer; some are power‑only. The correct cable must support USB 3.0/3.1 data.

Check Device Manager

  • Press Windows + X → Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Look for “USB Root Hub” or “Generic USB Hub.”
  • If you see a yellow warning icon, right‑click → Update driver.

Update drivers

  • Visit the HP support page for your Omnistudio X31.5:
    HP Omnistudio X31.5 Drivers
  • Download and install the latest chipset and USB drivers.
  • Restart the PC after installation.

Test stand ports

  • Plug in a simple USB device (like a flash drive) into the stand’s port.
  • Check if it lights up or appears in File Explorer.
  • If still inactive, confirm whether the stand requires additional power (some stands have a separate power input).

By ensuring the correct upstream USB‑C connection, using a proper data‑capable cable, and updating drivers, the stand’s USB ports should come alive. Since the back ports on the machine work fine, the issue is isolated to the hub connection rather than the PC itself.

I suspected that may be its purpose, and had installed it thusly. I followed the steps you prescribe. Unfortunately, an external drive did not light up. We seems rather stuck. I realise that I can return to the store and require they fix it but the size and weight of the thing make this very difficult.

Doing some further research I found discussions about this problem referring to the incorrect fixing of the stand to the PC, accompanied by photos where the PC had fallen off the stand and sustained damage. Also I recall when assembling the parts that both stand and PC have electrical connections at the join. I ask myself therefore why an additional wire? Now taking the assembly apart and putting it back together has its own risks although I still have the protective cardboard. I shall wait until my son is here and we shall give it a try!

Thanks for the update @DocAS52

Thank you for sharing the extra detail—it really helps to picture the situation. I completely understand your hesitation about dismantling and re‑assembling such a large all‑in‑one system; the weight and the risk of damage make it a task best done carefully and with a second pair of hands, as you’ve wisely planned.

From what you describe, the stand and PC do have integrated electrical contacts at the join, which are intended to activate the stand’s USB hub and other functions without needing a separate cable. The included USB‑C lead is likely provided as an alternative or supplemental connection, but if the hub isn’t coming alive even with it attached, that points to either:

  • The join between stand and PC not being fully seated, so the hub contacts aren’t engaged.
  • The cable itself being non‑data (power‑only) or not connected to the correct upstream port.
  • Drivers for the hub not yet registering in Windows.

Since the back ports on the PC are working perfectly, the core system is fine. The next logical step is indeed to re‑seat the stand carefully, making sure the electrical connectors align and lock firmly. Doing this with protective cardboard and an extra set of hands is the safest way to avoid strain or damage.

Once re‑seated, reconnect the USB‑C cable to the designated upstream port on the stand, then check Device Manager in Windows to see if the hub enumerates. If it does, the stand’s USB ports should light up and recognize devices.

You’ve done the right thing by pausing until you can handle the reassembly safely. Once that’s complete, the unexplained cable and inactive ports should make more sense.
