Hi @Divine_12,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP laptop's backlight may not be functioning correctly, or the brightness settings could be inadvertently turned down. Here are steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
Adjust Brightness Settings
- Keyboard Shortcuts: Look for the brightness adjustment keys on your keyboard (usually marked with a sun icon). Press the keys to increase brightness.
- Windows Settings:
- Open the Start Menu and type Settings.
- Navigate to System > Display.
- Adjust the brightness slider to increase the brightness.
Check for External Display Settings
- If the laptop was connected to a projector, it might still be configured for an external display.
- Press Windows + P to open the projection menu.
- Select PC screen only or Duplicate to return the display to the laptop screen.
Update or Roll Back Display Drivers
- Right-click the Start Menu and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display Adapters and right-click your graphics driver.
- Choose Update driver and follow the prompts.
- If the issue began after a recent update, select Roll Back Driver instead.
Check Night Light or Power-Saving Mode
- Disable Night Light by navigating to Settings > System > Display > Night Light and toggling it off.
- Ensure the laptop is not in a power-saving mode:
- Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery.
- Set the power plan to Balanced or High Performance.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Shut down the laptop completely.
- Disconnect any peripherals (e.g., USB drives, external monitors).
- Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if possible).
- Hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain residual power.
- Reconnect the power adapter and battery, then turn it on.
Inspect for Hardware Issues
- If the above steps don’t resolve the issue, the backlight or LCD cable might be damaged.
- Connect the laptop to an external monitor to confirm:
- If the external monitor works fine, the issue is likely with the laptop's display hardware.
- If the external monitor also shows dim output, the graphics card may be at fault.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
