I’m facing a strange issue with my HP Pavilion 14-ec1005AU (AMD Ryzen 5000 series).

The laptop works perfectly on battery. No flickering, no display issues.

But when I connect the original HP 65W charger:

  • The screen starts flickering.

  • Sometimes letters/text distort or don’t display properly.

  • The issue becomes worse when I connect USB-C (it starts charging and flickering increases).

  • At 60 Hz refresh rate it flickers.

  • At 40 Hz it becomes mostly stable.

  • When I start multitasking (e.g., YouTube), flickering increases.

A local shop updated the BIOS. For a few days the problem seemed gone, but then it started again.

Since the laptop works fine on battery and becomes unstable only while charging and under load.

Has anyone faced something similar?

Hi @RA0054

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Here are some structured steps you can follow to troubleshoot the flickering issue on your HP Pavilion 14-ec1005AU when charging:

1. Display Settings Check

  • Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
  • Scroll down and click Advanced display settings.
  • Confirm the refresh rate is set to 60 Hz. If flickering persists, test with other available refresh rates to see if stability improves.

2. Graphics Driver Update

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Display adapters.
  • Right-click your AMD graphics driver and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  • Restart the system after the update.

3. Power Plan Adjustment

  • Open Control PanelPower Options.
  • Select Balanced plan.
  • Click Change plan settingsChange advanced power settings.
  • Expand DisplayEnable adaptive brightness. Turn it Off for both battery and plugged in.

4. Battery and Charger Verification

  • Ensure you are using the original HP 65W adapter.
  • Inspect the adapter and cable for damage or loose connections.
  • Test with another compatible HP adapter if available, to rule out power fluctuations.

5. BIOS and Firmware

  • Since BIOS was updated earlier, confirm the version in System Information.
  • If updates are available, install them using HP App.

6. Hardware Diagnostics

  • Open HP App.
  • Run DiagnosticsComponent TestsDisplay and Power.
  • Check if any errors are reported.

7. External Monitor Test

  • Connect an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C.
  • Observe if flickering occurs on the external display while charging.
    • If external display is stable, the issue may be limited to the laptop panel.
    • If external display also flickers, it points to power or graphics driver interaction.

By following these steps, you can narrow down whether the issue is related to display settings, drivers, power management, or hardware.
