I see the blue screen saying I have the Hard Disk error 301.
I then run the HP diagnosis - both quick and extensive scans - and no issues, Everything passes. Ran a CMD -chkdsk - no issues. Did the file explorer.....properties...check - and nothing there. Now what?

Hi @PCmadness
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
I can certainly understand your concern, especially when you're seeing a SMART Hard Disk Error (301) message even though the diagnostics and disk checks are showing that everything passes.
To help us understand the situation better, could you kindly confirm a few details?
- When does the 301 error appear? Does it show at every startup or only occasionally?
- Have you noticed any other symptoms such as slow boot times, freezing, unexpected restarts, or files taking longer to open?
- Could you kindly share a photo of the exact error screen?
In the meantime, I would suggest trying the following steps:
- Check for BIOS Updates
- Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page and install any available BIOS updates for your specific model.
- BIOS updates can sometimes improve storage device communication and hardware monitoring.
- Run HP Hardware Diagnostics from UEFI - Click here for steps
- Turn off the notebook.
- Power it on and repeatedly tap F2.
- Run: Storage Extensive Test
- Kindly note any Failure ID or additional messages that appear.
- Back Up Important Data
- Since the SMART 301 message is associated with storage health monitoring, it is a good idea to ensure important files are backed up while further checks are performed.

The SMART Hard Disk Error 301 is generated by the drive's built-in Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART). This feature continuously monitors the health of the storage device and alerts the system when it detects that certain drive parameters may be approaching a threshold.
Since your diagnostics are currently passing, it is possible that: The storage device may be showing early signs of wear that have not yet caused a diagnostic failure.
This does not always mean the drive is immediately unusable, but it is an indication that the storage device should be monitored closely and important data should be backed up. The results of the UEFI Storage Tests and any Failure IDs will help determine the next best course of action.
I hope this helps.
