Hi @OmsunilPatel

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for sharing that—it’s really frustrating when an update reaches 100% and then throws an error. Based on the image you uploaded, the error code 0x800f0988 is linked to a failed Windows Update, specifically the KB5031354 cumulative update for Windows 11 Version 22H2.

Here’s how you can resolve it:

Step 1: Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

  1. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and click Run.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions and restart your PC.

Step 2: Clear Windows Update Cache

  1. Press Windows + S, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Run these commands one by one
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop bits
    del /f /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download
    net start wuauserv
    net start bits
  3. Restart your PC and try the update again.

Step 3: Manually Install the Update

  1. Visit the Microsoft Update Catalog:
    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5031354
  2. Download the correct version for your system (x64-based).
  3. Double-click the downloaded file to install manually.

Step 4: Use the Windows Update Assistant

If manual installation doesn’t work:

Perfect timing—let’s get your update issue resolved smoothly. Since the error says “We could not complete the install because an update service was shutting down,” we’ll focus on restarting the update services and clearing any stuck components.

Step-by-Step Fix for Windows Update Error (KB5030310)

1. Restart Windows Update Services

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Scroll down to find these services:
    • Windows Update
    • Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
  • Right-click each one > Restart.
  • If either is disabled, right-click > Properties > set Startup type to Automatic, then click Start.

2. Clear the Update Cache

  • Press Windows + S, type Command Prompt.
  • Right-click and choose Run as administrator.
  • Type the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop bits
    ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
    net start wuauserv
    net start bits
  • This clears the update cache and forces Windows to rebuild it.

3. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  • Click Run next to Windows Update.
  • Follow the prompts and apply any fixes it suggests.

4. Retry the Update

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update.
  • Click Retry all or Retry next to KB5030310.
  • Let it run uninterrupted—avoid restarting or sleeping the system during this process.

5. Optional: Download the Update Manually

Let me know how it goes after these steps. If the update still fails, I’ll guide you through checking system integrity next. We’ll get this sorted together.
