Hi @Chopperdown445,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand how unsettling it feels when you’re ready to power down your HP laptop after a long day, but the "Task Host Window" keeps lingering. Sorry to hear about the issue.

Please try the steps below and let me know how it goes.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Wait a Few Moments Before Shutting Down:
    • Sometimes background processes need a little extra time to finish.
    • Wait for about 10–15 seconds before shutting down again.

  2. Use Task Manager to Identify Stuck Processes:
    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    • Look for apps that are not responding (especially Windows apps or updates).
    • Right-click any stuck apps and choose End Task.

  3. Disable Fast Startup:
    • Press Windows + S, type Control Panel, and open it.
    • Go to Hardware and SoundPower OptionsChoose what the power buttons do.
    • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    • Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended), then save changes.
    • Restart your computer to see if the shutdown improves.

  4. Install Windows Updates:
    • Sometimes, pending updates can trigger Task Host behaviour.
    • Go to SettingsUpdate & SecurityWindows UpdateCheck for updates and install all available updates.

  5. Scan for System File Errors:
    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator (Right-click Start → Windows Terminal (Admin)).
    • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
    • Let Windows scan and repair any system file issues.

  6. Perform a Hard Reset (if the issue persists):
    • Shut down your laptop completely.
    • Disconnect the power cord.
    • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
    • Reconnect the cord and turn the laptop back on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
