New HP laptop.  When I try to type the 'at' sign above the digit 2 it types inverted commas.  I have to hit the inverted commas button to get an 'at'.  Can I change this or is it a fault?

@annagene, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

It sounds like your new HP laptop is using a UK keyboard layout, but the system is set to a US keyboard layout, or vice versa. This mismatch causes keys like the @ (at sign) and " (inverted commas) to behave differently than expected.

Here's how to fix it by changing the keyboard layout in Windows:

For Windows 11 / Windows 10:

Open Settings
Press Windows + I to open the Settings app.

Go to Time & Language > Language & Region

Under Preferred languages, click your language (e.g., English (United Kingdom) or English (United States)).

Click Options.

Under Keyboards, check which layout is listed:

  • If it says US, and your physical keyboard is UK, click Add a keyboard and select United Kingdom.
  • Then click the US layout and choose Remove.

Restart your laptop or sign out and back in to apply the changes.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
