HP OmniBook X Flip Laptop AI

My mouse keeps disappearing with the touchpad, only time I am able to get the mouse is if I use a external mouse. I had downloaded all the possible drivers, done BIOS update, done configuration checks, restarted multiple times all of which if able have only gotten the mouse back for a short time before it disappears again. I did get an update around a month ago which seems to have started these troubles. What can I do to get the touchpad to work, my laptop does not have the glowing dot in the corner of the touchpad so I am unable to do that fix, as well as I have tried the Fn with 6, 7 and 9 and nothing occurred.

Hi @canarywhoop,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand the frustration, especially because the touchpad temporarily comes back and then disappears again. Since you have already updated the BIOS, installed the available drivers, checked the configuration, and restarted the notebook several times, I would not keep repeating the same driver installations.

The fact that the problem appears to have started after a Windows update is important. We should first determine whether Windows is losing the touchpad device or whether there is a hardware issue.

1. Check whether Windows is detecting the touchpad
When the touchpad stops working, connect your external mouse and go to: Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Touchpad

  • If Touchpad is shown and turned off, turn it on
  • If the Touchpad option completely disappears, please let me know. That would indicate Windows is no longer detecting the touchpad device, rather than simply having the touchpad disabled.

Also check whether “Leave the touchpad on when a mouse is connected” is enabled. HP provides this setting specifically to prevent the touchpad from being automatically disabled when an external mouse is connected.

2. Run the HP hardware test
Because the touchpad repeatedly disappears even after driver and BIOS updates, this is an important test.

  1. Shut down the OmniBook completely.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second.
  3. When the Startup Menu appears, press F2
  4. Select Component Tests
  5. Select Mouse/Touchpad
  6. Run the available touchpad test and follow the instructions.

HP specifically recommends the Mouse/Touchpad test in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI when troubleshooting a touchpad that stops working.

If the touchpad fails the UEFI test, please let me know the exact failure/result code. That would point toward a hardware-level problem rather than Windows.

If the touchpad passes the UEFI test but disappears only after Windows starts, that makes the Windows driver/software side much more likely.

The rest of the steps are shared in the next post

3. Check Windows Update
Since you noticed this began after an update, please go to: Settings → Windows Update → Update history

Please tell me the date and KB number of the update installed around the time this problem started.

Also select: Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates

Check whether Windows is offering any driver updates. HP recommends checking Windows Update and Optional Updates when troubleshooting touchpad functionality.

4. I need your exact OmniBook model
“HP OmniBook X Flip” covers several different configurations, and HP provides model-specific drivers. For example, HP has separate driver pages for the OmniBook X Flip 14 and OmniBook X Flip 16, with drivers selected according to the exact model and Windows version.

Please provide the complete model/product number shown on the bottom of the notebook or in Settings → System → About

For example, something similar to 14-fmxxxx, 14-kcxxxx, or 16-cbxxxx.

If you can, upload a photo of the model/product-number label or the Windows System → About screen. I can then help identify the correct HP driver package rather than having you install generic or incorrect touchpad drivers.

Most important: please tell me whether the Mouse/Touchpad test in F2 → Component Tests passes or fails, and whether the Touchpad option disappears completely from Windows when the problem occurs. Those two results will tell us whether we should concentrate on Windows/software or the touchpad hardware.
