Hello,

I own an HP Victus 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop PC. Recently, my motherboard was replaced by HP service.
Since then, I have noticed that the keyboard backlight is always on, costing me lot of extra power and cannot be turned off using the usual Fn key shortcut + f4 (backlit action key).

Before the motherboard replacement, the backlight could be toggled. Now, none of these options work — the backlight stays on continuously, even when the laptop is idle, but turns off after I close the lid.

Troubleshooting I have tried so far:

  • Checked HP OMEN Gaming Hub settings (no effect)

  • Updated BIOS and all HP drivers via HP Support Assistant

  • Tried keyboard backlight function key (no effect)

  • Performed hard reset (no change)

It seems like the backlight control is no longer functioning after the new motherboard was installed. Could this be related to an incorrect firmware setting, missing driver, or a mismatched replacement part?

Please advise on how I can restore the ability to turn off or control the keyboard backlight.

Thank you.

@SATYAM5403, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Persistent Keyboard Backlight on HP Victus Laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your keyboard backlight remains on despite trying traditional methods to toggle it after a motherboard replacement. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue:

Check BIOS Settings:

  • Restart your laptop and enter BIOS settings. You can usually access the BIOS by pressing the F10 key during startup.
  • Navigate to the "System Configuration" tab and ensure that "Action Keys Mode" is enabled. This setting allows you to use function keys without pressing the Fn key.

Adjust Backlight Settings in BIOS:

  • In the BIOS, you might also find settings related to keyboard backlight timeout under "Built-in Device Options." You can set it to "Never" if you prefer the backlight to not turn off automatically.
  • If the option for backlight settings does not exist, it might be that the functionality has changed with the new motherboard.

Update Drivers and BIOS:

  • Ensure your laptop's BIOS and drivers are fully updated. Visit the HP Support website, enter your product information, and download the latest updates.

External Inspection and Reconnection:

  • Inspect and reconnect any cables related to the backlight if accessible. Ensure that no cables are loose or improperly connected, especially after the motherboard replacement.

Test Keyboard Functionality:

  • Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) to test keyboard functionality. At boot, press the F2 key to enter diagnostics, select "Component Tests," and then choose "Keyboard."

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

  • I have checked the BIOS and tried the Action key (that didn't work).
  • Have looked for backlit timeout config, haven't found it. (probably option is available in other versions HP Victus laptops).
  • Have Updated the drivers and BIOS from hp support website.
  • Haven't tried checking the keyboard related wires (the issue is that keyboard lights don't turn off, that probably means wires are at right place).
  • Have tried HP PC hardware diagnostics and tested keyboard, all the keys are working as intended.

Earlier I thought there might be some issue with EC controller which probably handles this special key processes instead of direct keyboard driver. I also have an Omen key in this keyboard it works perfect and launches the Omen Gaming Hub on press. So, I can't figure the issue here.

@SATYAM5403, Thank you for the detailed follow-up — I can imagine how frustrating it must feel to have your keyboard glowing constantly, especially after everything was working perfectly before the motherboard swap.

From what you’ve described, it really does point towards the Embedded Controller (EC) firmware on the new board. The EC is like the “traffic cop” for special functions such as the backlight keys. If the replacement board came with slightly different firmware or wasn’t matched to your exact Victus model, the Fn+F4 command might not be registering correctly — leaving the backlight “stuck” on.

At this stage, the best step would be to reach back to the service center and request them to re-flash or align the EC firmware with your specific product SKU, or confirm that the replacement board is indeed the correct match. Sometimes even a tiny mismatch in the board version can cause features like the backlight toggle to misbehave.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Okayy, well in that case. Can you let me know the steps to check whether the motherboard is correct for my laptop.

Other than that I have already checked hp part surfer and compared the SKU, and other relevant key for parts and they all match. So, it was flashed correctly. What are other steps to check if correct motherboard is installed.

Thanks for helping
