Hi @iceman17,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand you’re trying to enable Legacy Boot on your HP notebook. On many newer HP models, Legacy Support (CSM) has been intentionally removed to meet modern security standards (UEFI + Secure Boot). Where Legacy Support still exists, it is hidden behind Secure Boot and related firmware settings. Below are recommended steps and notes to help you determine availability and configure settings safely.

1) Enter HP UEFI/BIOS Setup

  1. Power off the notebook completely.
  2. Power on and press Esc repeatedly, once per second.
  3. When the Startup Menu appears, press F10 to open BIOS Setup (HP Computer Setup / UEFI).
This is the official method to access BIOS on HP notebooks.

2) Check for Legacy Support (if your model provides it)

In BIOS Setup:

  • Navigate to System ConfigurationBoot Options (names can vary slightly by model).
  • Look for Legacy Support (or Legacy BIOS) and Secure Boot.
  • If Legacy Support is present
    1. Disable Secure Boot.
    2. Enable Legacy Support.
    3. Confirm any prompts, then Save Changes (F10) and Exit.
On HP platforms that still offer Legacy mode, Secure Boot must be OFF before Legacy becomes selectable.

3) If “Legacy Support” is Missing or Greyed Out

This usually means your notebook does not support Legacy boot (by design), or a setting is blocking it:

  • Secure Boot enabled → disable it first, then re‑check for Legacy options.
  • Chipset/SATA mode set to Intel RST → switch to AHCI, then check again (some firmware hides Legacy when RST is active).
  • Firmware policy → certain HP generations ship UEFI‑only with Legacy permanently removed; in such cases, you must use UEFI boot media (and compatible OS installers).

Important: If your HP notebook is UEFI‑only, attempting to install or boot an OS in Legacy mode will not be possible. You should create UEFI‑bootable media (GPT + FAT32, secure‑boot‑compatible) and keep Secure Boot enabled whenever your OS supports it for best protection.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
