Hi @licinia,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for sharing your model: HP ENVY 17.3" Laptop PC 17-cw0000 (761Z0AV). I understand certain keys only work intermittently or require multiple presses; this is often due to hardware weardust/debris, or firmware/driver issues. Here's how to troubleshoot it:

1. Run HP Keyboard Diagnostics

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc, then F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Select Component Tests > Keyboard Test.
  • Press each key to verify if it's detected.
  • If some keys don’t register, it’s likely a hardware issue.

2. Check for Filter Keys (Windows Accessibility Settings)

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
  • Turn Filter Keys off (this can cause delayed or missed key presses).

3. Update or Reinstall Keyboard Driver

  • Press Win + X > Device Manager.
  • Expand Keyboards, right-click your keyboard, and choose Uninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop to reinstall the driver automatically.
  • You can also check for updates at HP Driver Downloads.

4. Clean the Keyboard

  • Use compressed air to blow out dust or debris under the keys.
  • If you're comfortable, gently remove the affected keycaps and clean underneath with a soft brush and isopropyl alcohol (90%+).

5. External Keyboard Test

  • Connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard.
  • If it works fine, your built-in keyboard may need replacement.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
