@collinxx, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding fan issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Hearing the fan sound from your laptop when you come close to it might be related to several factors. Here are some common reasons:

Acoustic Perception: Your proximity to the laptop increases your ability to hear the fan as you get closer. The sound fades away as you move farther because it's less audible from a distance.

Temperature Regulation: Laptops have heat sensors that trigger the fan to cool down internal components. When using the laptop intensely or in a warmer environment, the fan may run more frequently to maintain optimal temperatures.

Active Processes: If you have applications running in the background that demand more processing power, the laptop may generate more heat, prompting the fan to run. This might coincide with your interaction, as activities like starting new processes or applications happen when you approach the laptop.

If the fan noise is unusually loud or continuous, it might also indicate other issues such as dust buildup, inadequate ventilation, or a malfunctioning cooling system. Here are some steps you can take to address the noise:

Clean the Vents: Ensure that the vents are not blocked by dust or other debris and that the laptop has proper airflow.

Check for Background Processes: Investigate if there are any unnecessary background processes running that can be closed to reduce load on the CPU and consequently the fan activity.

Update BIOS and Drivers: Make sure that your BIOS and system drivers are up to date, as updates can improve fan control.

Use a Cooling Pad: A cooling pad can help in dissipating heat more effectively, reducing the need for the internal fan to run at high speeds.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
