Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

The keys for brightness and volume on my PC do not work unless I press the button I want to use together with fn but that has been very annoying. I have been told to hold fn and escape button together for a few seconds and that should fix it but it just opens the hotkey support error on the screen.

Hi @JayMul

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Sounds like your function keys are making you jump through hoops just to adjust brightness and volume! 🎛️ Let’s tweak a few settings so you can get things working smoothly—no extra finger gymnastics required.

Your Fn key behavior is likely controlled by the Action Keys Mode in your BIOS settings. Since the Fn + Esc method didn't work, try the following steps to disable the need for Fn key to use brightness & volume controls:

Method 1: Change Action Keys Mode in BIOS

  1. Turn off your laptop completely.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately start pressing the F10 key repeatedly to enter BIOS Setup.
  3. Once in BIOS, navigate to:
    • System Configuration > Action Keys Mode
  4. Change the setting to Enabled (this allows F1-F12 to work directly for brightness, volume, etc. without Fn).
  5. Press F10 to save and exit.

Method 2: Update or Reinstall Keyboard Drivers

If BIOS settings didn’t work, try updating the drivers:

  1. Right-click Start Menu > Device Manager.
  2. Expand Keyboards.
  3. Right-click your Standard PS/2 Keyboard (or similar name) and click Update driver.
  4. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  5. Restart your laptop and test the keys.

Method 3: Update HP Hotkey Support & BIOS

Your laptop might need an updated HP Hotkey Support Driver:

  1. Visit HP’s official support website.
  2. Search for your laptop model.
  3. Download and install the latest HP Hotkey Support and BIOS update.
  4. Restart your laptop and check if the issue is fixed.

Let me know if you need help with these steps! 😊Hopefully, we’ll have those keys working hassle-free in no time! ⌨️ If they’re still being stubborn, let me know, I won’t rest until your shortcuts are back in action! 😊
