Hi @Asdf889,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that some keyboard keys, including Backspace, 1, and the arrow keys, are not working properly. Let's try the following steps to identify the cause.

  • Restart your laptop: Restart Windows and test the affected keys in Notepad or another text editor.
  • Check for stuck keys or debris: Turn off the laptop and gently clean around the affected keys using a soft, dry brush. Do not remove the keycaps, especially if the laptop is under warranty.
  • Turn off Filter Keys: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn off Filter Keys if enabled.
  • Test the keyboard before Windows loads: Restart the laptop and repeatedly press Esc to open the HP Startup Menu. If the Startup Menu appears, check whether the affected keys respond in the available menus. Do not change BIOS settings.
  • Run a keyboard diagnostic: If available, open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics and select Component Tests or Device Check > Input Devices > Keyboard Test. Follow the on-screen instructions. If the test fails, note the 24-digit Failure ID.

You can also connect an external USB keyboard to check whether it works normally.

To help us narrow this down, please let us know:

  • What is your exact HP laptop model?
  • Do the affected keys work intermittently, or do they never respond?
  • Did this issue start after a Windows update, a liquid spill, or accidental damage?

If the affected keys also fail during the startup menu or the keyboard diagnostic reports a hardware failure, the built-in keyboard may require further assessment.

Best regards,
Kuroi_Kenshi
