screen flickering on startup

Hi @Zee9

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Screen flickering on startup can be caused by several factors, ranging from hardware issues to software conflicts. Let's go over a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the flickering issue:

1. Check the Display Cable (If using an external monitor)

If you're using an external monitor, the issue might be related to a loose or faulty display cable.

  • Check connections: Ensure that the cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, etc.) connecting the monitor to your PC is securely plugged in.
  • Try a different cable: If possible, swap the cable to see if the issue persists.

2. Restart in Safe Mode

Booting your computer in Safe Mode can help determine whether the issue is related to a driver or software conflict.

  • How to boot into Safe Mode in Windows 10/11:
    1. Hold the Shift key and click Restart from the Start menu or on the login screen.
    2. After your PC restarts, click Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, and then select Restart.
    3. Once your PC restarts again, select 4) Enable Safe Mode or 5) Enable Safe Mode with Networking.

If the flickering doesn’t occur in Safe Mode, the issue is likely related to a software conflict, and you may need to check for problematic drivers or recently installed software.

3. Update Graphics Drivers

Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers are a common cause of screen flickering.

  • To update your graphics drivers:
    1. Open Device Manager (press Win + X and select Device Manager).
    2. Expand the Display adapters section, right-click on your graphics card, and choose Update driver.
    3. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
    4. If an update is found, install it and restart your PC.

Alternatively, you can download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) if Windows doesn’t find any updates.

4. Check for Windows Updates

Outdated system software can sometimes cause display issues, so ensure your Windows operating system is up-to-date.

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click on Check for updates.
  • Install any available updates and restart your computer.

5. Disable Hardware Acceleration

Some applications (like browsers or video players) use hardware acceleration, which can cause flickering, especially if the graphics driver has issues. Disabling hardware acceleration may help resolve the issue.

  • For Google Chrome:
    1. Open Chrome and go to Settings > Advanced > System.
    2. Toggle off Use hardware acceleration when available and restart Chrome.
  • For other apps: You can usually find similar options in the settings or preferences of other applications.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
