Hi @kasanwal

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Here are the steps you can follow to troubleshoot the issue of your laptop showing “plugged in” even when the charger is not connected:

Power Reset

  • Shut down the computer completely.
  • Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and adapter, then power on the system.

Check AC Adapter and Battery

  • Inspect the adapter and cable for any physical damage.
  • If possible, test with another compatible adapter to confirm whether the issue persists.
  • For removable batteries, reseat the battery properly.

Update BIOS

  • Ensure the BIOS is updated to the latest version available for your model.
  • Updating the BIOS can resolve incorrect power state reporting.

Battery Driver Reset (Windows)

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Batteries.
  • Right-click Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, then select Uninstall device.
  • Restart the computer. Windows will automatically reinstall the drivers.

Run System Diagnostics

  • Restart the computer and press F2 or Esc repeatedly to access diagnostics.
  • Run the battery and power tests to check for hardware issues.

Check Power Settings

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Ensure the selected plan is balanced or appropriate for your usage.
  • Reset plan settings to default if needed.

These steps will help identify whether the issue is related to software misreporting or hardware components. If the behavior continues after completing them, it points toward a hardware-level concern with the battery or power circuitry.
