hello everyone, I have a hp pavillion 15 ec0018nf, which I bought used, it has been giving me problems for a while and according to me it is the BIOS, which is version F20, but on hp website the latest version available is F19.
I tried to downgrade or put the bios of a similar model but later but in both cases it gives me either unable to open bios file or unable to verify the signature file.
could you tell me how to change bios, then another problem i have is the touchpad, it works but after a while it goes jerky and stops working, drivers all updated all ok, i don't know if it can be the bios fault

Hi @Christian06,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you’re dealing with a couple of frustrating issues! Let’s tackle them step by step.
BIOS Issue
The main problem here seems to be the mismatch or signature verification failure when attempting to update or downgrade the BIOS. Here are some tips:
Double-check the BIOS Version and Compatibility:
- Make sure the BIOS version you're downloading is for the exact model number of your HP Pavilion 15.
- Go to the HP Support website and use your laptop's serial number or product number to ensure you're downloading the correct BIOS file.
Prevent Downgrade Block:
- HP laptops often block BIOS downgrades. If your laptop came with BIOS version F20, it won't allow you to install an earlier version (F19).
- To bypass this, try enabling the "Rollback" option in the BIOS settings (if available) or use HP BIOS Recovery:
- Turn off your laptop.
- Press and hold Windows + B (or V, depending on your model) and then power it on.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to attempt a recovery or downgrade.
Check BIOS File Signature:
- If you’re seeing "unable to verify signature," ensure the BIOS update file isn’t corrupted:
- Re-download the file directly from HP’s website.
- Avoid using a third-party tool to flash the BIOS, as HP BIOS files are designed to work with HP's proprietary tools.
Custom BIOS Warning:
- Installing a BIOS from another model or modifying it can result in a bricked device. Avoid using BIOS files meant for other HP models, even if they seem similar.
Alternate BIOS Update Methods:
- Use a USB BIOS Update:
- Download the BIOS file and create a bootable USB from HP's BIOS Update utility.
- Restart your laptop, press F10 to enter the BIOS setup, and choose the USB drive to update.

Touchpad Issue
Your touchpad behaving erratically could indeed be related to the BIOS, but it might also be caused by other factors:
Touchpad Driver Check:
- Go to Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices and uninstall the touchpad driver.
- Reboot your system to let Windows reinstall the driver automatically.
- Alternatively, download the latest driver for your model from HP’s website.
Check for Conflicting Software:
- Sometimes, third-party software (e.g., external mouse utilities) can conflict with the touchpad. Disable or uninstall such programs to test.
Power Settings:
- Ensure the touchpad isn't being affected by power-saving settings:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced settings.
- Under "USB Settings" or "Touchpad," ensure power-saving options are disabled.
Test with External Mouse:
- If an external mouse works fine when the touchpad acts up, it's less likely to be a software issue and more likely a touchpad-specific hardware or BIOS issue.
Next Steps
- BIOS Update First: Ensure the BIOS is up-to-date and properly installed.
- Touchpad Troubleshooting: If the issue persists after the BIOS update, consider having the touchpad hardware inspected.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
