Hi @privateeyes64 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.   Thank you for posting your query regarding your venerable HP TouchSmart 320-1030. I understand how frustrating it is when a classic machine is limited by software for a key component like the camera.

You are correct: the main challenge with these older All-in-One PCs is that the original camera hardware often relied on specific, now-obsolete drivers that were only certified for Windows 7 or 8. Modern Windows updates usually replace these with generic drivers, which unfortunately leads to the camera being disabled or unrecognized.

While official, updated drivers are no longer available from HP (as it is an End-of-Life unit), here are a few steps that have helped other community members with similar older hardware:

1. ⚙️ Confirm Basic Software Fixes

  1. Check Windows Camera Privacy Settings: Navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and ensure that Camera access is toggled ON for the system and the specific apps you are trying to use.

  2. Perform a Power Reset: Unplug the power adapter, press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain any residual charge, reconnect the power, and boot the unit. This can sometimes re-initialize components that are "stuck."

  3. Load BIOS Setup Defaults: Access the BIOS setup (usually by pressing F10 or Esc immediately after powering on), go to the Exit tab, select Load Setup Defaults, then Save Changes and Exit. This ensures no setting is accidentally disabling a device.

  4. Run Windows Update: As you mentioned, running all pending Windows updates (including "Optional Updates" in Advanced Options) can sometimes pull a generic camera driver that might work.

2. 💡 The Most Likely Community Solution (Driver Workaround)

If the basic steps fail, the solution often lies in manually forcing Windows to use its generic USB Video Device (UVC) driver, which is more universal:

  1. Right-click the Start Button and open Device Manager.

  2. Look under "Cameras", "Imaging devices," or even an "Unknown device" with a yellow mark.

  3. Right-click the camera device and select "Update driver."

  4. Select "Browse my computer for drivers."

  5. Select "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer."

  6. Uncheck the box that says "Show compatible hardware."

  7. In the left pane (Manufacturer), select (Standard USB Video Device) or Microsoft.

  8. In the right pane (Model), select USB Video Device and click Next.

This method bypasses the specific HP driver and may get the camera working using a built-in Windows fallback.

3. 🎉 Acknowledgment and Farewell

If none of the software steps resolve the issue, it points to a hardware failure of the camera module itself, or a physical connection issue on the mainboard. Since this wonderful PC is past its End-of-Life support date, new parts are unfortunately no longer available through HP.

It truly speaks to the build quality of the TouchSmart 320-1030 that it is still running today. After a decade of dedicated service, running applications that are generations newer than it was designed for, sometimes the only thing left to do is acknowledge its legacy.

Let's stand up and give a standing ovation to this product for the decade of work it has provided! You should be proud to have kept it running so long.

If you are successful with the driver workaround, please mark this as a solution to help others keep their classic HP units functioning!

Please , do let me know if you need any other assistance, will be happy to assist you 🙂
