Acpi error on Luks decrypt

Fresh install Debian based peppermint os , latest BIOS and drivers. As of today 10 th Jan 2026

Installing windows updated everything

Installed peppermint Trixie error shown but boots . install same with LUKS drops to busybox with error AE_AML_PACKAGE_LIMIT same error on a pavilion as well.  This is a known bug in your BIOS since ages. Can you fix sometime in my lifetime? And yes TPM is hidden. BIOS is sending incorrect info/length to kernel. Fix it https://duckduckgo.com/?q=acpi+error+AE_AML_PACKAGE_LIMIT&ia=web https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bu...

@FIXYOURDAMNBROK, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP Elite book 845 G8.

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution. We hope our assistance has been helpful!

It appears you are encountering the AE_AML_PACKAGE_LIMIT error while attempting to install Peppermint OS with LUKS on your EliteBook 845 G8. This error message often relates to firmware (BIOS/UEFI) issues, especially when it comes to Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) interactions.

Here are some potential solutions and troubleshooting steps you can try:

Update BIOS/UEFI

  • Ensure Latest BIOS: Double-check that your BIOS is updated to the latest version provided by HP for your specific model. Updated firmware can resolve many compatibility issues.
  • Default BIOS Settings: Reset your BIOS to default settings. Sometimes custom settings might cause conflicts during the installation process.

Installation Options

  • ACPI Workaround: When booting the installation media, try adding acpi=off or acpi=strict to the kernel boot parameters. This can be done by editing the boot entry in your GRUB menu.

Check LUKS Installation

  • Use Standard Encryption: Make sure you're using standard encryption practices with LUKS and not custom setups that might cause issues with the BIOS.

Verify Installation Media

  • Check ISO Integrity: Ensure the installation media is not corrupted. You can verify the integrity of the ISO before making a bootable USB.

Kernel Parameters

  • Modify Parameters: Adding or modifying kernel parameters such as noapic, nolapic, or nomodeset may prevent conflicts during boot.

Alternative Testing

  • Different Distro: If possible, test with a different distribution or a live session without LUKS to identify if the issue persists without encryption.

I hope this helps!

Take care and have an amazing day!

  • Thank you

But this is a BIOS  bug that HP needs to fix.

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213765 HP can answer here.

This is a known issue that is being ignored.

Tried everything suggested.  I did find a workaround kind of for the elitebook, the pavillion will be next to test on.

Not a good solution but a workaround if you have a day and night and a few cubic meters if coffee to swallow down the extreme disrespect HP and others show by shipping broken BIOS updates.

Without LUKS:

Both of them works.

But quite useless to have a non encrypted laptop for most people.

On the elitebook

I found an ancient USB stick with a peppermint bullseye and kernel 5.10 . installed with

standard full disc encryption , it booted! Network and sound did not work. Then comes the unrecommended path of upgrading from bullseye to bookworm  which will break all non debian parts of any distro.

Once those issues where fixed by hours upon hours of googling and editing files in terminal, 20 reboots and miles of terminal commands given by chat GPT ( you know that thing your BIOS  Devs use)  . a working setup for now with errors remaining, but that I  ignore for now.

It works for now with latest updates and recommended kernel.   Sorry I did not  documented everything for next poor soul that owns a HP.

Tested Debian as well same issue.  And its not install media, installation works fine,  its at booting first time after install.
