Hello
I recently purchased this HP elitebook 840 g8 from ebay, and received it yesterday. The seller had multiple of them and later confirmed he purchased it from an auction of a local business that was closing down. The problem though is that the Absolute Security from the previous owner is still active and transmitting my location. The ebay seller can't get the previous owner to turn it off as they are out of business and I can turn it off, however there is an option to clear the TPM, and it gave a warning that it would clear the encryptions and such and I am worried that it would wipe my nvme. My friend also said that I could technically get a felony because it could classify as stolen property, even though I bought it from ebay. What should I do in order to not get a felony, and also clear the previous organization's stuff of my new computer

Hello.
Absolute Security cannot be bypassed by clearing BIOS or TPM, or by disconnecting any batteries or such.
The only course to turn it off is by the original owner (or someone with the Absolute credentials) disabling it for your laptop via Absolute management portal. There is no other way.
I highly recommend asking the seller for a refund (or replacement) since the laptop is 100% unusable until Absolute is turned off.
