I installed the new Synaptics device driver to eliminate the keylogger vulnerability, but then two new Base System Device entries appeared in Device Manager, both with a hardware ID of VEN_197B for JMicron PCIe SD/MMC Host Controller. Obviously these were triggered by the new device driver, though I never would have guessed there was a connection between Synaptics and JMicron device drivers. I don't see any solution other than to reinstall the JMicron device driver. I think this is a bug which should be addressed by HP, but that won't happen because my laptop is out-of-warranty.

Instead of installing the JMicron device driver currently offered by HP, I installed the previous one, sp57014, and that eliminated the errors. I was told of this fix for Windows 7 in the consumer forum, but I did not try it before for Windows 8.1.
