I Purchased my laptop on August 30 of 2022 and three months ago it quit charging and I am here at Best Buy and they are telling me my main battery is already shot. He said the life expectancy is around five years but now I’m gonna have to pay for a new battery after only owning the thing a little over a year. I had a Toshiba before this and it lasted me 14 years and didn’t have battery issues. Is this normal for a Hewlett-Packard to lose the battery this quick?

Hello.

I would say this is not normal for any laptop, be it HP or others. Your laptop battery may be defective, but then again the Best Buy fellas may be keen to sell you a new battery in any case...

You forgot to mention the laptop model, but since you posted on the Business Notebook forum, you should try the HP Power Manager software to verify the battery health yourself. The HP Power Manager should come preinstalled but you can also download and install it for yourself from your laptop download page. Here is direct download link to the latest version.

If you have a consumer notebook (non-Elitebook/Probook/Zbook), then you can use HP Support Assitant to see the battery status.

Also, if your laptop battery is long-life and/or non-removable, it will have the same warranty as your laptop. So if you still have warranty left you can have the battery replaced under warranty. This applies only to Business Notebooks.

There are many ways to prolong - or shorten - battery life. High temperatures, keeping it fully charged at all times or storing it with zero charge are all detrimental to any battery.
