Microsoft Windows 11

Hi,

yesterday my 830 G5 notebook automatically updated BIOS to 1.28 version. The BIOS now give error message Bios not for production use. Nothing changed, original motherboard, etc... In Device Manager the Q78 firmware device is not functionally. I downlaoded older BIOS version, but if i want to install it, give an error message.

Pelase help.

Hello.

I recommend contacting HP support directly and creating a case for this. The support personnel has access to HP internal support bulletins and may have a solution ready for you.

You should be able to install the earlier BIOS version (1.27) unless the 1.28 has implemented a block to deny downgrades to earlier versions. No mention of such block in the release notes, though.

You can always try to create a bootable BIOS downgrade drive with the BIOS installer. It's an option there right in the beginning.

I would have to see the error message to give any more advice why the BIOS downgrade failed. Post an image for further diagnosis.

I have the same problem. A downgrade is not possible. See my thread, with logfile etc. etc.

1. That Notebooks are out of warrenty.

2. That's a serious issue, because the 1.28.00 Bios update from HP and/or MS is damageing the 830 g5!!

Tell  me how to ask HP (and/or MS) to stop that update?

Hello.

Your hardware Warranty does not really matter here - you can still call HP and ask for advice in your problem. Check HP support website for phone contact number in your country and call them. Tell them about this. Maybe the update worked perfectly for HP engineers with their test laptops so the more people complain the faster they should acknowledge the problem and produce a fixed version.

HP has supplied the BIOS update into Microsoft Update Catalog, but you can prevent BIOS update with Windows Local Policies. Dell has a good article on this. Setting a BIOS password also blocks the update but the update will still try - and fail - so it's not a perfect solution either.

BIOS updates initiated via Windows Update or HP Softpaq in Windows save the update file to an EFI partition in your storage drive. I recommend creating the bootable USB drive which does not rely on HDD/SSD. When you run the HP BIOS Softpaq, it prompts to create such an USB drive.

Do note that the Release Notes for 830G5 update 1.14 states that it has implemented a block to prevent installing earlier BIOS versions, so you can't go for older updates. BIOS updates are always cumulative so all fixes in 1.14 should also be there in subsequent versions.

Calling HP-Support:

I toled him of the bios  update an that no dowgrade worked

he joined per remote software

he looked at the bios info

he started serval updates with older bios from hp page

then he wanted to use the hp cloud recovery tool ...

unfortunatly (or FORTUNATELY???) I had to go because of an apponintment ...

The support man called me twice more. He insists that the hp cloud recovery tool also resets the BIOS.
He did not accept my question where this is written and why the opposite is said in the forums.
