I can only get into my PC when I am charging with my charger and cannot boot with only battery. However,my battery health is completely fine and I can use my laptop for hours without charging if I dont shut it down. The only problem is that I can not boot my laptop without a charger

Hi @hcmlxox

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern. Since the battery powers the notebook normally for hours after startup, the battery itself may still be functioning correctly. The behavior points more toward the system not initializing properly from battery power during the startup sequence.

I recommend following these steps if you have not already completed them:

Perform a hard reset:

  • Shut down the notebook.
  • Disconnect the charger.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Connect only the battery (leave the charger disconnected) and try to power on.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Start the notebook with the charger connected.
  • Press F2 repeatedly at startup to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the Battery Test and Power Component Test.
  • Note any Failure ID or result message.

Check BIOS settings:

  • Start the notebook and press F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Press F9 to load BIOS defaults.
  • Save changes with F10 and restart.
  • Test whether the system can boot on battery alone.

Verify BIOS version:

  • While Windows is running, check if a newer BIOS is available for the HP EliteBook 1040 G9 from HP support.
  • If an update is available, install it while connected to AC power and then retest.

Test battery startup conditions:

  • Confirm the battery charge level when attempting to power on without the charger.
  • Try booting with the battery above 50% charge.

Check HP Hardware Diagnostics battery details:

  • Look for Battery Health, Cycle Count, and Battery Capacity information.
  • A battery can show good health and still experience a startup power delivery issue that diagnostics may help identify.

Before considering battery replacement or service, please follow all the troubleshooting steps above and share:

  • Battery Test result (Pass or Failure ID)
  • Current BIOS version
  • Approximate battery charge percentage when startup fails
  • Whether the Power button LED or any Caps Lock blinking pattern appears when attempting to boot on battery only

This information will help us determine the next troubleshooting step.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
