I too had an issue with a 'start of warranty' date for my Elitebook (as well as a weak, pitiful display ).   The warranty started on the day the machine was built-not the day I purchased the laptop.  HP policy apparently. After much communication with HP, the warranty commencement date was changed to date of purchase.  HP sent me an email to say they were delighted with a successful outcome to my complaint.  Have you ever heard of such a wacky warranty policy?

Allow me explain to you the logic of this.

 

Let us imagine that a PC is manufactured on April 1st 2025 and then the factory ships this same laptop to a big distributor in your country who re-sells this PC to a tech retailer like BestBuy USA or Currys UK <examples> on April 20th 2025.

 

You as an end user decided you need a new computer, visited your favourite local tech store and then purchase this same laptop on May 16th 2025.

 

So, the laptop had this path before it ends up in your home:

HP factory -> Country distributor -> Tech Retailer store -> You (end customer)

 

Since you are the end customer, there is no way for HP to automatically know you are the end customer and when exactly you purchased the PC. Per local laws, your warranty starts from the time of your purchase from the store (seller) but you never purchased your HP PC from HP directly. Your invoice/receipt/proof of purchase doc is the document which shows when you actually purchased the product. Only after you provide your proof of purchase, HP can then adjust the warranty start date in their systems. In the rare occasion you might need a service for your PC, the warranty will then be adjusted in HP's systems since you will approach HP or HP authorized service partner to receive your free in-warranty service/repair.

 

Some customers purchase directly from HP and they create custom PC configurations. In such cases, HP has much better visibility who is the end customer because the HP factory will assemble a PC for you and ship it straight to you as a final customer.

Thank you.  It does help, although in my case I bought the laptop directly from HP, and then had to go through a warranty dispute process with HP to have the warranty date changed.  A simple reading of HP's own receipt would have sufficed.(IMHO)  Cheers.
