I had to disconnect my DIsplaylink Hubb to take the laptop somewhere else and when i attempted to reconnect the Hub I received the message HP USB Type C connector The connected device exceeds the power limit of the USB -C port. I hae had the Hub for several years and the Laptop has run out of warranty so I have had that a while also, and this has never happened before.
After all the usual actions, driver updates, reboot of everything etc, I took it to my local tech shop where they repeated what I had done. They then attemped to connect one of their functioning hubs to the ProBook and got the same message.
I suspect this is an HP or MS software update bug, but what do I do to fix it.?

@MichD2, Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP ProBook 450 15.6-inch G10 Notebook PC (71H58AV).
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution. We hope our assistance has been helpful!
If you're receiving the message that the connected device exceeds the power limit of the USB-C port, it indicates that the hub might be drawing more power than the port can provide. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
-
Check Power Supply:
- Ensure that the DisplayLink Hub is connected to its own power supply, if it has one. Some hubs require an external power source to function properly, especially when connecting multiple devices.
-
Inspect Connections:
- Ensure all connections are secure and that the hub is properly connected to the USB-C port.
- Check for any damage on the USB-C port or the cable itself, as this could affect the power delivery.
-
Verify Hub Requirements:
- Check the specifications of the hub to ensure that the power requirements are within the capacity of your HP ProBook's USB-C port. Some older hubs might not be compatible with newer USB-C power specifications.
-
Use a Different USB-C Port:
- Try connecting the hub to a different USB-C port if one is available on your laptop. This can help determine if the issue is with the port itself.
-
Reset Power Settings:
- Go to the power settings in your operating system and reset them to default. Sometimes, power management settings can interfere with USB power delivery.
-
Test with Another Device:
- Connect the hub to another computer to see if the issue persists. If the same message appears, it might indicate a problem with the hub.
-
Consider Updating BIOS:
- Ensure that the BIOS of your HP ProBook is updated. An updated BIOS can sometimes resolve hardware compatibility issues.
-
Hardware Inspection:
- If possible, visually inspect the USB-C port for signs of debris or dust that might be interfering with the connection.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you Meghana_10
The BIOS driver update did the trick, thank you. When I bought the computer I was told that the BIOS in my HP Probook updated automatically. Clearly it doesn't, or not often enough. My ASUS didn't have an automatic BIOS upgrade, but it had a very simple process. Not so with HP but there you go. Having said that, I am so relieved that I am back to 2 monitors plus the laptop screen.
