HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14 inch Mobile Workstation PC (AY8L1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I have received my ZBook Ultra 14 G1a.

I want to purchase a portable SSD (eg Samsung T9) that uses USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps).

Do the Thunderbolt 4 ports on the ZBook Ultra 14 G1a support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps)?

I assumed so when I purchased this laptop but when searching today online for “ZBook Ultra 14 G1a specs” I came across a document that I was not sure if it was officially from HP which was called QuickSpecs which had an asterisk next to the Thunderbolt 4 ports on page10, beneath which it said:

“USB 20Gbps is not available with Thunderbolt 4”.

That would be very disappointing if true – but I need to know before choosing a portable SSD.

Any clarification would be much appreciated on whether this laptop does support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps).

It has two Thunderbolt™ 4 with USB Type-C® 40Gbps signaling rate (USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 2.1) ports and the specs also says

*USB 20Gbps is not available with Thunderbolt™ 4.

Regards.

Thank you.

So to confirm, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is not supported on the Thunderbolt 4 ports on the ZBook Ultra 14 G1a?

I ask because I find the USB terminology confusing.

Thats a strange restriction. I got a new OWC 1M2 with real USB4 support connected to the "Thunderbolt/USB4" port, i put an 8tb western nvme in it, hell that thing is fast 🙂

@ Tineidae

Thanks. Just to clarify, is your OWC 1M2 connected to a ZBook Ultra 14 G1a Thunderbolt 4 port?
