Hello everyone,
I have an issue with my HP USB-C G5 Essential Docking Station. It simply refuses to output a 4K signal. Here’s the setup:
- I’ve connected two monitors via DisplayPort:
- One monitor is 3440 x 1440 at 144Hz.
- The other monitor is 3840 x 2160 at 60Hz.
The 1440p monitor works flawlessly at its full resolution with 60Hz (though 144Hz would be nice, 60Hz suffices for work). However, the 4K monitor only functions at 1080p, which is far from optimal.
According to the docking station’s datasheet, it should be capable of supporting both monitors at their full resolutions. Interestingly, if I connect only the 4K monitor (without the 1440p monitor), it operates at 4K resolution. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work in parallel.
My laptop is an HP EliteBook 850 G8, and I updated the dock’s drivers using another laptop since installations are restricted on the G8.
Does anyone have a solution for this problem? 🤔

Hello.
Check first the laptop BIOS settings for "Enable High Resolution mode when connected to a USB-C DP alt mode dock" - enable it.
Check that both monitors have DSC - or Display Stream Compression - feature, and that it is enabled.
Displayport cables do matter. If the cables came with the displays they should be ok, but a DP cable from 15 years ago will likely cause problems. Check the Displayport Wikipedia article for more about this if you have doubts. The Dock and your laptop should both be able to operate the 1440p monitor at 144Hz.
